I have lurked on these forums literally since they first started, but I haven't felt that I did anything interesting enough to post. I thought it was time to go through that right of passage that most modelers do ... model a car. However, I wanted to do something a little different than the fancy sports cars or futuristic designs that most choose. So, I did some research and found a car that I thought woud be challenging and also was just visually interesting ... a 1936 Fiat Topollino.

It has been the challenge that I expected. I have started over several times as I discovered better modeling techniques through trial and error ... especially error.

What I am posting today obviously has a good deal more detailing to do. Such as the grill, windshield wipers, the interior, etc. (the factory released car did not have bumpers). But, I would like to get comments and suggestions as I head into the home stretch on finishing this model. All are appreciated.

looks great

one critique ... it looks like a small scale model to me. Not a full scale car. Not sure what to do to fix it tho. I guess it depends on what your end result will be.

Anyone else see it too?

Looks great even from a "Lurker":)

My issues would be the gasket around the front window looks too thick, the color looks too purple, the headlights need to be clear.

I based that only from photos on the internet.

Funny when I first got into 3D I did the "Render Mirrored Sphere" thing but I never modeled a car. Your way ahead of me! Hopefully you post more often now.

Beautiful work there...looking forward to seeing this develop. Any chance of a brighter render?

Yup, that was an unexpected car ;)

Really like it ! (from a modelling and render point of view, great work!...But I don't think I would like to drive a car from that time... did it have 3 or 4 Bhp? ;))

Looks like you already use HDRI (the reflections), and it might be enough to add a ground plane (bright grey or white) to show some shadows.

Would make it pop out, since the rather dark body color kinda blends in with the black background.

auragreg ... its good that it looks small in scale I guess, because the Topolino was the smallest car available at that time. I think when I do the final render, I will need to make sure there are some familiar objects there to help establish scale. As an aside ... its size was the origin of the name, Topolino means mouse in Italian.

Steinie ... I'll check the gasket. The headlight lens has some texturing to it and looks cloudy with this temp lighting. It does show up properly when it is properly lit. I haven't decided on a final color yet, but you are right about this one appearing too purple in this rendering. I think a lot of that came for the influence of the HDRI file blue sky.

And I can't claim I just got into 3D ... I have been using TS since the release of the first version. I don't lay claim to being a great modeler and I just never did a car.

Thanks for the imput guys.

Very well done! I would suggest a brighter render though, it would really give some life to your car, not that I'm saying it's ugly or anything right now lol.

Ts7.51? Vray? Well, I've been modeling off and on since I was 14 years of age....and your way ahead of me.

Excelent Slent! S'funny though, I'm like Steinie in that I've never really modelled a car - although I did make some lowpoly blob-mobiles to use as traffic in the distance and a sort of cartoon Model T none of these were models of real world vehicles.

Top marks to you for selecting such an eclectic vehicle - makes an interesting change to the usual supercars.

You say you don't lay claim to being a great modeller but FWIW I'd say you are well on the way!

Good work, well done.

Topolino means mouse? Hmmn, I wonder what sort of car Steve Britton drives?

Maybe a very dirty one, or perhaps something in shiny metallic cherry red with lots of chrome and spiky bits... ;)

Very nice job slent - I don't know much about hrdi (not available on my version of TS) but perhaps you could somewhat deasturate the image to reduce the amount of blue (but keep the contrast) and hence the colour cast on the paintwork? Very nice model - I too would be interested in seeing a wireframe to see if it gives any clue on your modelling approach.

Definetley look forward to seeing this develop.

Here is the latest stage for your comments. Still quite a bit of detailing to do, but it's coming. I've been gathering some textures to put the Topolino at the curb sitting outside an old church.

Once again, I welcome your comments. The input I got from the first round was very helpful. A number of the changes I made were based on your input.

Wow this one is WAXED!:)

I think you went slightly too far with the lighting. You lost the chrome look in the hubcaps, there is 3 spots of purple still showing, the shadow under the left rear tire doesn't look right, you lost the emblem at the top of the front grill which was in the original. The rear view mirror looked a little better in the original.

You really have something very nice in the works!

I think the purple is just the blue in the reflectance shader mixing with the red paint in the car, maybe a different reflectance shader?

Yeah, I know the surface is a bit too reflective. However, I'm not really worried about that at this point. Just trying to get the geometry right. The highlights catching a purple color don't concern me right now because I will be using an entirely different HDRI file when I place the car in a scene in front of the church.

The comment about the badge is spot on. I had a dummy in the first one. I am in the process of adding necessary detail. I was only recently able to find reference for the 1936 version of the Fiat logo.

OK. Just so everyone feels a little more comfortable, I threw in a couple of textured panels and changed the HDRI file just to give you a feel for the environment I see the car finally appearing in. Please don't critique the lighting or the modeling of the environment yet ... I am still working on getting the car geometry correct. Thanks.

Well, I think I am about done with the car. Unless you guys come up with things that need fixed, I am ready to start modeling the environment and to go to work seriously on the lighting.

I put the guy in there to give you an idea of scale ... remember the comment about it looking small when I showed you the first stage? Well, it really was small.

What do you think? All comments welcome.

Looks great! Only thing is the red color of the wheels.... Something is off there, at least that's what I think... Are the wheels supposed to be the same color as the car? Maybe it's just a shadow making them look darker, idk... Anyone else agree?

The wheels are the same color as the body. That will probably show up better when I do the final lighting.

Really my comments would be lighting and reflection on the front fenders and side doors. The reflection is too perfect and the sides could use lighting tricks from other car modelers here. (I don't know their trick with lighting panels) Hopefully they can suggest...

I would put in a rear view mirror. It may not be period, but it is typical of updating the older model cars to be street legal.

Ha, yes, very true... Depends on if he's going for modern realism or 1936 realism.

As a matter of fact, that is an oversight. It should have a rear view mirror inside as well as the side view mirror. Thanks.
