I'd like to try and produce a model of a bird with its wings at rest at its side, how can I go about this? I know I could try and produce a solid mesh with bumps at either side to suggest wings but I'd rather go one step further and have the wings actually extrude from the body and hang down. Is it possible?

Anything is possible. The extrude function in tS is called "sweep". Basically it's just a question of knowing how to use the modeling tools and your imagination. Basically you just have to extrude the right polygons and drag them into their position.

Very rough attempt to try and help you. 1st shot shows basic mesh with wing swept from a polygon face. 2nd shot shows SDS mesh. If you used mirror modeller it would also make life easier.

This way you can select just the wings and move them to get the right pose.

I was personally going down the wrong route and using MetaBalls and I tried Sphere primatives. I found the meshes were a little complex to pull around.

That's why Subdivision Surface modeling is so popular. Your control mesh can be very low on poly's and you can modify it very easy.
