Whew! My new computer has me on a rather steep learning curve just now! Not only am I trying to get to grips with tS 7.11 I'm also getting my head around The GIMP which so far seems like a great application (and a truly great price!).

What I'm looking for is any pointers as to how to best take advantage of tS 7's PSP output using the GIMPs layers. Any suggestions or recommendations - particularly if they are pitched about halfway between beginner and intermediate level! - would be really appreciated.

I know enough to know this should be an incredibly handy feature but not enough to know how to take advantage of it. Any tutorials or helpful links appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I can't argue with the price, but 1 thing you should remember about The GIMP is that [AFAIK] it was originally created for Linux, & the thing about Linux users is... they're all masochists [to a greater or lesser degree]. :D What I'm trying to say is user-friendliness is often not the top priority.

Don't you mean PSD? ;)

I've only fiddled with The GIMP briefly, so I can't help much except to say that all I know about layers in The GIMP can be found here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=20204&postcount=7), though you've probably figured that stuff out by now anyway. :o

New to tS7.11 but having been using Gimp for quite a while. Here's a good resource with several tutorials: http://www.wingimp.org/ . There are several other sites with various tutorials. Just google the gimp!:>)

I use Gimp for all the graphics and pic editing for our company and while the interface takes a little getting used to it's been very stable and simple to use. Does it have everything? No, but then we didn't have to spend a bundle for it either.

Just starting to use tS7.11 and it's taking a bit to get used to, too! But I luv it so far!

Just did a quick test to see what the issues might be.

I switched my renderer to lightworks and made a PSD render.

Loading the image up in PS, I noticed that the "Linear Light" blend mode is used. GIMP doesn't have this blend mode. Closest is Hard Light, and if you check the compatibility mode box on the dialog that pops up when rendering that saves it out using Hard Light instead of Linear Light mode.

Problem I noticed is that my copy of GIMP seems to want to hue shift the colors 180 degrees. :-( Probably a GIMP problem though since the images load up fine in PS.

Be nice when we get GIMP ver 2.4 for Windows. Lot of very nice improvements.

Since VRay doesn't support iPak, I've been rendering to PNG mostly anyway.

Though I have to admit, it'd be really cool if we could get tS to natively support xcf format... ;-)

:D What I'm trying to say is user-friendliness is often not the top priority. So far I've been able to get around in it OK for the basic stuff - 2d editing graphics with layers is 2d editing graphics with layers so although the UI is idiosyncratic it's not that bad for someone accustomed to trueSpace with it's truly idiosyncratic (and excellent IMHO) UI. I've always liked that thing Roman said about UI design becoming the artform of the 21st century.

Don't you mean PSD? ;) D'oh - yep that's the one I meant. Question: What is a TLA. Answer: Three Letter Acronym!

Thanks for the link though, I'll go check it out.

Yeah the tS manual mentions this but I was struggling to get my brain around it - somehow your sentence here makes more sense!:o

Not enough sense for me to say I understand it but maybe enough to give me some insight - thanks for the suggestions.
