I tried to create vertex and patchpoint animation in tS7, but it was not possible. Why? I went back to tS 6.6 and created such animations, then imported the scene to tS7 and it worked!

And where did that little box displaying the current frame number go?

That's the way it is. Native Bones System in TS7 has some more bugs. And is finally nearly useless. You need TS 6.6 to do the rig and animation stuff and then load it to TS 7 to bring it to work in TS 7 ... :D
