Is there such a thing in tS as composit Rendering?

I've used layers before and tS appears to recognize all layers as the same when rendering. In other words I can't seem to render effects on one layer and then render another layer with another effect.

Is there a trick to this or ?

Which version of tS are you using? 6.6 has the iPak plug in which lets you render out depth, shadow, lighting, color, etc all to different PSD layers. VERY useful.

iPak is built in to 7.11 but only works with Lightworks renderer. You can use that to composite lightworks and Vray render features though.

I just tested one of the layer scenes that ship with tS6.6 and Hide a layer then rendered to screen and render to file and it did not render the hidden layer.
Select your layer icon and choose Hide layer.
