May seem strange question but I wondered if anyone has used a 3D input device successfully with trueSpace 6 or 7?
I particularly had the Space Navigator in mind as it is available for a paltry 67 euros delivered and is supposed to be an excellent bit of kit.
I really want to try one in truePlay but I have few apps that might make use of it. I have heard it can be used in 3D games and photoshop (panning, zooming etc.) but all I have to go on with tS is the truball.tsx.
So anyone got any ideas or experience with 3Dconnexion/tS?? |

The only help I can give is that I tried a trackball a while back and found that it wasn't really any advantage. Admittedly it was a standard trackball rather than a dedicated 3D piece of hardware so make of that what you will?

Cheers Steve, I bit the bullet and just bought one (£44 delivered) as it can be used with many 2D apps as well. Looks a well made bit of kit but I really want to run it in truePlay. Luckily someone wrote a program to allow you to bind the device with any function in an app.
Can't wait to try it out and let...will let you know how I get on...:) |

Arrived today. As a 3D designer I am very impressed by the design and build quality...this thing looks cool and feels substantial.
Good news for modellers...it works with the truball.tsx plug in...:D
I hope to work it into player side soon as well.
Madmouse, if you are someone like me who hates their workflow being interupted when poly modelling by having to leave editing to use the widget or Nav keys to rotate around or zoom into the model...you are gonna love this.
If you saw it running Steve...I am sure you would want one...:jumpy: |

No problem, if you are ever passing Doncaster-pop in for a demo.
Alternatively, I found a company in UK who will let you try one out for 21 days...just can't remember the address...:confused: |

No problem, if you are ever passing Doncaster-pop in for a demo Thanks for the offer but I dont often get that far north of the border (they eat mice up there you know;) )
I'd love to know if it works well with Silo. I looked on their site and its not listed. Whats the deal with the program you spoke about that binds it to any functions in an app??? Got a link??? Oh and where did you get your one from???
So many questions and so little time :D
Thanks

Went through the 3dconnexion.com site and chose buy from the Space Navigator page-it automatically directs you to the european section. They have a forum there too and that is where I got the program from-pretty sure I saw a thread about Silo there.
Watch out though, that program did not work well alongside the truball.tsx but then you might not need it.
Cost including delivery (by UPS) was 69 euros (£44ish). Bargain in my book and delivered within two days.
I smell your credit card burning from here...:rolleyes: |

Hi Guys,
I'm a newbie. As I was reading your posts I thought you might be interested in this input device called "Nostromo™ SpeedPad n52". It has numerous programmable keys that you can assign a key or combination of key stokes into a single key to perform a task. You can assign three shift keys that triple the number of programmable keys. It also has a wheel and D-Pad.
You can buy one from http://www.provantage.com/belkin-f8gfpc100~7BELV01C.htm for $21.28.

If I remember correctly, this got a pretty poor review in 3D World where the Space Navigator got a resounding thumbs up especially at that price...:D
Either way, choice is good but I would still like to hear of any progress by Dev's in making these things work in workspace.
I feel a poll coming on...:rolleyes: |

The Space Navigator and the Nostromo Speed Pad are really two totally different things. The Space Navigator looks pretty cool for zooming around a scene. I don't have one so I can speak as to it's usefulness but it does look interesting.
I do have the Speed Pad though and can say without a doubt that it is very useful. I use it a lot. It works great for any program with hotkeys and video games. Instead of using the keyboard, you can just program the Speed Pad. It fits comfortably on your lap and perfectly in your hand. I did use it with 6.6 way back and it worked great. I use it for Silo too but haven't worked out a good setup yet. I will set it up for tS too at some point. It is way faster then a keyboard when you get used to your setup.
So I'm not sure why it didn't get a good review. It's a very useful device.
Oh, you can share your profiles too. So if anyone out there uses the Speed Pad and has it set up with tS you should post your N52 profile. I would be interested in seeing other peoples setups. If I get a good setup one of these days I'll post my profile too. :) |

I will look into it...maybe I got models mixed up. Either way, it is Caligari's support for any 3D input device (including Wacom/tablet support) I am more interested in...:D |

Could you please be more specific about Wacom/tablet support?
I use an Intuos 3 with TS 7.51 with no problems already. As someone mentioned in another thread, you just lower the sensitivity of the stylus for TS only. (Tilt Sensitivity to Normal and Tip Feel to Firm) Plus you can of course set up the Express Keys and Touch Strips for specific TS functions.
Were you wanting to expand on this existing support or was there something you find lacking?
Cheers |

Not really tried to use my Wacom for anything other than 2D stuff but there was a discussion about using the tablet to generate displacement using the new tool and I could also see it used to generate hair (pressure= density or length with maybe tilt for direction).
So, I know what you are saying and I put it in brackets so Wacom users (like me) would not feel left out but I am really asking for some news from Caligari regarding 3D input devices in workspace rather than tablet support just now...:) |

That would be a very nice feature. I'd like to see several choices in TS that could be assigned to pressure,tilt, rotation,etc. Corel Painter X does this and has eight or so features that can be controlled by varying the pressure,etc.. As you said, hair would one obvious use for it.

Understood. That's a worthy crusade as well! :D |

This is my first try setting my SpeedPad for modeling practices (the forum won't allow upload of profile file type. Attached are screenshots and profile in SpeedPad.rar file). In trueSpace, I have hot keyed these button icons as follows:
Undo=U
Redo=R
Add SS=Numberpad+ Key
Remove SS=Numberpad- Key
Pick and Move Selected=M
Select Faces=F
Select Edges=L
Select Vertices=V
Polydraw=5
Front=2
Perspective=3
Left=4
Pick and Paint=P |
