Knowing how important it is to begin with less complicated options while studying... the more is less thing.

I've downloaded some HDR images now I've found out that the lights in an HDRI image are translated by TS into a lighting scheme that can be either lit natively by the HDRI or supplemented by standard TS lighting

Here's the but :) each and every HDRI has very dramatic lighting. In the TS literature HDRI is described as Highly Dramatic lighting and while that may be a spellcheck thing there's an element of truth there

Can anyone point me to an HDR image of for example a desert/ocean scene with just the sun above and not dawn or dusk, no dramas as my forces friends say: just one light above wide open space with no mountains please? Car parks and malls are fun but a simple realistic scene light is what would be good at my primitive-fumblings stage

This way I am hoping to locate the light source and so shift the scene around to match the simple light source. Currently everything is bright orange blue and fluorescent shades, no type M 6000K light anywhere. Which may be nothing to do with the HDRI setup and some other problem like rendering options. Which is why I mention it :)

TIA

Peter

Sorry but the idea only came to me last night how to proceed by simplicating and adding lightness

My first look at this the other day took me to those dark highly saturated images (Saturation yes I'd tweaked that parameter) and looking again not to be lazy I see plenty of natural light images, will add a few links in preparation for asks for help to come. Like the clanking Ghost of Christmas Future :)

Hugely interesting subject, surprised not seeing in the chat about high dynamic range that the reason for the high dynamic range is that light is expressed as a logarithmic quantity not a linear quantity. As far as our sensory organs Mk.1 Eyeball and light level detectors are concerned. We use compression technology which beats being blinded by the light as the song goes doowop

Prodigy's Vray interior then as the subject for HDR lighting experimentation thanks again Prodigy

"Currently everything is bright orange blue and fluorescent shades"

That's not the image, that's controllable in the Saturation parameter for HDRI. V-Ray and Lightworks actually work differently, so the default value in the parameter gives over-saturated colors for one render engine.

Simply lower the value until your colors become sane :)

Also ensure your settings will give smooth enough shadows - if the settings are too low quality, you will get strange and overly defined shadows, as there will not be enough light sources to give a smooth result.

HTH!

Thanks Tom I'm about to delete the config file and start again, so many things I've learned and so much still but a clean slate and then forget about HDRI while I learn more about Vray. I'm working on only a very simple scene but I might have got ahead of myself - thanks for your help all. HDMI looks to be very useful for commercial work, model of a car etc. We're building a small movie sequence in what's becoming a WW2 operations room to introduce our virtual squadron (combat flight sim) to rookies

I must say that the system looks to be very powerful (the new object-oriented link editor, will be classy with 7.5 I have a feeling) but I must get to grips with the basics of TS first yes :)

It was the lighting from the HDR images I was experimenting with Tom, lighting the objects with powerful colours at all reduced settings trust me I tried them all with only environmental lighting but- it'll be me. I'm after desaturated colours so - much to learn. Really enjoying it anyway.
