I have a question about TS7.5 upgrade from ts6.6. What are some of the big

Improvements in regard to modeling in this upgrade. I don't really use the

animation aspects, but only the 3d modeling & rendering and was wondering

what would be the modeling/rendering improvements that would be gained from going from 6.6 to 7.5?

Thanks

That's a biggie! Here is an off the top of my head, by no means complete glimpse:

1. Workspace handles bigger models and scenes now without slow down

2. Edge loops, new sweeps, new selection abilities (extending selections to surrounding faces / edges points etc), all make for an easier time in working with Point Editing

3. New Soft Select tools let you do more "organic" modeling, such as create bulges etc, with ease. Hard to describe the tool - the points in the middle are "highly selected" and those out to the edge are "less selected", and the less selected a point is, the less affected it is by a move or scale or rotate. End result is a whole new way to work with your model though

4. Displacement Brush also allows a more organic way of modeling, painting on details

5. Rendering is much better with the options for HDRI in Lightworks

6. New real-time preview is more accurate and detailed, doesn't suffer from "tearing" of mesh and texture when zoomed in close

7. Level of detail tool that works really well

8. Normal maps - make them from your tS models while using the level of detail to reduce the geometry, or paint them on as textures. Much more realistic than regular bump maps. Gives similar visual effect to adding geometry for bumps, creases, veins, lines, seams, etc, all without actually doing that.

9. New snapping tools, including under point edit, and new lines of inference, very handy for more quickly getting those point edit things done accurately.

10. New SDS, much improved algorithm that gives nicer results than in 6.6.

11. Hair (which also lets you place plants on a landscape etc)

12. Customisable interface (which speeds your modeling as you can set up the interface you want)

13. New plugins and interfaces from users thanks to LE etc - even if you'll never script yourself, using handy scripts written by others is great - eg grow trees, etc.

14. Posing - you might not animate, but if you ever want a character in your scene, tS6.6 pretty much had them locked in there as a rigid statue and you had to pose in an external application - now you can pose your characters for your scenes, make them sit down, lie down, whatever you need for the scene you are rendering. Whether you animate them or not, bending them into the right position is still a big benefit for rendering!

... and there will be more. But that's the first ones to come to my mind right now - not bad, having 14 as the "first ones" that I didnt really need to start scratching my head and thinking about to remember ;)

HTH!

Might help if you guys had a What's New page at the web site with a list of new features.

Oh, this is very cool for me, I was going to order Mudbox this week, you may have saved me $600! :-)

I'll wait till my 7.5 is ready, then check out the soft modelling features. To give us a rough idea, would you say that these soft modelling features are kinda-sorta 'Mudbox lite' ? :-)

12. Customisable interface (which speeds your modeling as you can set up the interface you want)

Does that include being able to change colours on gui elements? (Toolbars/windows/scrollbars,etc)

Thanks Tom
