I've got a question for more experienced TS users out there. What's a good way to do panel lines on a vehicle that won't be too time intensive? The model I'm working on has cuts into the body for RCS rocket ports and cockpit windows, but I'd like to add more detail for access panels too. I do plan on using trueSpace's polygon reduction/normal mapping tool. Thanks.

Are you looking for someting like this image. If so, may be I can help you. But your choice may depend on what you want the object for. |

Hi:
I plan on using the model in a video game I'm (VERY) slowly working on. The game will support normal mapping, and that'll help speed up rendering. That picture looks something like what I want. I'm trying to show panel lines like what you'd see on an aircraft. Right now I have a lot of detail on the model in the form of windows, RCS ports, and the like. My intent is to reduce that geometry down using trueSpace's polygon reduction/normal mapping tools, so that may affect how I do the panel lines. I've seen some tools from NVidia that can take a texture map and turn it into a normal map. I'm concenred though that I may not be able to do that since trueSpace will be making the normal map. |

Ok the images below should help you. Keep in mind that this solution will increase your polygon quite a bit. If you plan to use this to make a normal map to use on a low poly object it should work. But I’m sure it’s going to take some time. Maybe you are better of with just a texture with a bump map. Anyway if you plan to paint your own textures this is an excellent tutorial on the subject http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=373024 . Hope this help and be sure to post the final render. |

Haven't had much luck to acieve the effects I wanted, I'm afraid. I did find an interesting tutorial on the web (http://www.4drulers.com/normal_mapper_docs.htm). If you scroll down you'll see a camera's normal map created from geometry, and then a height map with additional detail applied to the normal map. That got thinking about whether that's possible to do with trueSpace and PhotoShop with NVIDIA's normal map filter. I haven't tried it yet though. |

I think it has some good ideas, I just want to figure out how to do the equivalent in TS and/or NVIDIA's tools. |
