Does anyone know if there's a legal way to convert 3D Studio Max (.max) files into a truespace loadable version? I see quite a few really good models in this format but haven't yet found a good converter for them. Most that I know of actually require 3D Studio Max to begin with.
My guess is that there may not be a solution. If it's that hard to find on the internet, then there must be something special or proprietary about the format that prevents other folks from writing an object import capability for it.
Maybe I'm missing something though.
I downloaded a U-boat model off of turbosquid that came in .3ds format and .max format. I've imported via .3ds but it seems this doesn't seem to pass any normals info. Was hoping to import via .max to see if that did better.
Since other models frequently are available as .max only format I'm wondering if there is such a converter that works without actually having to load into 3D Studio Max (which I can't afford). |

Sorry Prof, everything I can find requires you to use a Max plugin. I'm surprised no one has hacked it yet  but hey, looks like you're gonna have to find a guy with Max to do the conversions for you.

Here is my understanding on the issues:
1. The 3ds format stores just geometry info. The .max format though stores a bunch of special info related to the whole scene, lights, maybe even render settings and the like - that is, a lot of stuff that doesn't translate across to other packages.
2. It is a proprietary format, and the only converters in existence require you to have Max installed on your machine to use the converter - even standalone items like Polytrans, made by third parties - you still need Max installed.
The upshot of all that is, unfortunately, that there is no way to convert max format files without owning Max and having it installed.
HTH!

Ya, that's one of the things I dislike about about the Max format, if you really need to get this file opened right away, you could find someone with 3ds max to convert it for you perhaps someone here in the forums could do it for you I would but my version is currupt and can't open it anymore and don't have the install disks anymore. Or you could download the demo version and convert it to OBJ if have the time. |

Using the demo is a good suggestion. Hopefully it works in that regard, even if the solution is rather temporary (as are most demos). Many of them seem somewhat feature disabled though.
I have some friends that might be able to help me convert it with their own copy of 3D Studio Max. Was hoping not to trouble them too much.
Thanks everyone for your help! :) |

It is a problem as plenty of free models are in max format, but then again, it is like trying to load a RsScn file into 3D Studio; it has lots of data pertaining just to its native program which could not be easily converted... |

I remember a few issues back, 3D World magazine gave away a complete software tool that they called the Paint Shop Pro for 3D files. You know the way in PSP you can open 2D graphic files from multiple formats and save them in multiple formats... Well, that's what this package did, except with 3D files. You could view 3D models in the package from multiple file formats and save them out into different file formats. I don't know if 3D Studio Max file format is supported or not, but it supported a lot of the major 3D software. Can't recall what issue it was either but it within the last year so within the last 12 - 13 issues or so. |

3DMax files are not supported by any ... any any software.. Its very closed fileformat.. Some time ago i try to find a converter and thers no one avaiable. Even i try the 3DExplorer, preaty good software but you must have 3DMAX installed to convert to other file formats..
There's no way... |

Already looked, but can't get it to show details for any issues other than 89. :( |

Have you tried biturn ?
According to its site (http://mirex.mypage.sk/index.php?selected=1#Biturn), the only 3DSM file formats it handles are ASC, 3DS, & ASE. |

I have an Old version of 3D Exploration that I use to open max files as and when required.
It is Version 1.53 which I think was the last version to have .max files included as my more recent version does not included .max
I am willing ti give it a go if anyone wants to try.
Cheers

Thank you everyone! Got the mesh in question imported in a way such that the .3ds file was adequate after all (a vertex normals issue). The ability to import objects in .max format would have been nice though as there is quite a few good ones out there. |
