This is one of those things that I find that I don't do often enough to remember when I need it, so here's a little tutorial that hopefully others will find useful as well. I'm using GIMP 2.2.13 for this one. GIMP can be downloaded here: http://www.gimp.org/

To get started create a new image 5155.

Fill the image with Black:

5156

Next we need to make a new brush. Click on the Brushes tab and right click on any existing brush. Select "New Brush" from the pop-up menu:

5157

A 50 radius soft edged brush should be large enough for what we want to do, so set the new brush settings as follows:

5158

Select the new brush just created and the paint brush tool:

Set your foreground color to white and using the paint brush tool with the Opacity set low, paint yourself a nice cloud. Make sure to leave dark and mid tone areas because those are what are going to be transparent in the final texture:

5160

Once happy with your cloud, click on the layers tab and right click on the background layer. Then select "Add Layer Mask":

5161

Choose "GreyScale copy of layer" and click "ok":

5162

You should have the following:

5163

Save your results in a tga file:

5164

It'll pop up a bunch of windows complaining, but just click "confirm" and "export" and "ok".

Now lets go on to the TrueSpace part.

Once in TrueSpace, click on the icon to bring up the material editor:

5173

Right Click in the middle of the color panel to open up the color map window and Click on "Texture Map" (the purple Caligari leaf image):

5169

Right Click on the button under the texture. Browse to where you saved the AlphaCloud.tga texture. Select it and click "Open":

5174

Click to on the blue ball icon above the texture map in the color shader panel to open the transparency flyout. Then select "Transparency Map":

5170

Right Click on the button in the Transparency section of the material editor, browse to your file, select it again and choose open:

Now create an object with your new texture or paint it on an existing object. Here you can see it in Player side on a plane above another plane painted blue:

Enjoy!
