I would be tempted to make a path (long rectagular polygon) running through the snow and remove same path from a large square poly which is the floor. Then I would make a shoe cutter and actually boolean a footprint out of the path. Save to library as footstep1. then boolean out the next footprint and save as footprint 2 etc.

Now you can load each path object in and render away.....maybe unorthodox but I use what suits and a boolean cut would give proper shadows...:D

It could also be make to look like a footprint in deep snow, whre someone has gone upto their knees in it!

Here is a quick example, you can see how I used an object that had a texture applied to a cutting object to leave a 'tread' effect in the snow in the other image. Would not work so well now but it is fast and effective...:D

The beginings of the capital city, Cyngburg. It's based on a hill fort type town but blown a bit out of proportion. For comparason the smaller pic is a close up of the spec on the top hill:

Animation, although it's going to take a while to get anywhere near ready to start rendering.

I've been messing with Dribble a bit today, i think if this gets toon shading in the next update i'll be using it for this project. This is a simple bump map applied to the hair with Filter ticked and an amplitude of 0.02:

and here's the bump map used:
