Ok I am making a USA flag for a screen display we have at church. I have made my texture and all, but my issue is getting the flag to "wave" properly. I have it currently done on a nurbs plane which does seem to work ok, but I need to know if that is the best way to do it. Also can the TS physics simulator do a decent job of simluating the flag waving. Below is my flag..flat. If anybody needs a flag texture..minus the textile texture..I will glady send it to you.

You will have to quad divide your flag plane primitive twice,

I dont know if the wave maker plug in still works or can even be found.

I would experiment with displacement mapping by moving the UV space.

Cheers

Hi Rjeff,

Mr. Bones has the right idea there with the displacement mapping / UV space approach to a related solution.

SteveBe made an awesome new script object and posted it here for download using these methods for vertex animation and uv texture animation simultaneously in realtime. As it is he used it to create realtime moving water waves for shared space settings!

It would also probably work for your project very well too. Try the link below and also ask SteveBe there about your intended use within his directly-related thread. (Note that the thread is related more to animation than to Tori!;) )

SteveBe's "Torus Knot" thread link: (Download is in Post #13 there)
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3676 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3676)

You may also want to consider the CKGameFactory Plugin called "ClothMotion," but be aware it has problems within TS7.5x as indicated in the following directly-related thread here:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3582 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3582)

Best of luck,

thanks for the help guys...that is why I love this forum. I guess I may be overlooking my solution for just the staic image for now. Would you still use the vertex editing or use the nurbs plane? For now I just want the flag to look like it is moving. I need to create the ruffels my self.

Hi Rjeff,

As I suggested above, you should probably ask SteveBe in his Torus Knot thread about his take on what you're trying to do here. SteveBe is light years ahead of me on this stuff and he would no doubt have some very good suggestions which could make this all happen for you.

We're all in this to learn, but I'm a TS Student just like you, and SteveBe is clearly much more of a TS Teacher than a TS Student!;)

For a static image just use NURBS.
No sense making it more complex than it has to be.
I did notice that your model lacks the reinforced strip of canvas along the leading edge. This is where the grommets that the flag is hung or flown from are located.
Here's an example made with NURBS:

Ok then nurbs it will be.....as far as the hanging goes it will not be attached to a pole or anything.

ok well I guess this is what I was going for. I have to work the flag so it can take up more of the screen.
