I was just browsing thru the new web pages for 7.5 and noticed the texture baking bit at the bottom of the surfacing page and it got me thinking, can you use this well with vray? could you bake vrays calculation onto your texture and then render it? of is vray fast enough for this not to matter? does this feature only work with lightworks radiosity?
i'm coming at this with the intention of making texture for animations so i'm hoping to save time rendering, will it work like this?
c'mon prodigy, your the local vray expert, you must have a idea. |

Obviously I can't comment on 7.5 but in 7.1 texture baking only works with Lightworks. It is also limited to very simple scenes if I recall.

The texture baking is the same as done in earlier versions of tS. Originally it was intended for giving good realtime walkthroughs in a scene by baking the effects of the lights into the textures.
Now however you have real-time lighting effects in the new real-time view, so that has become redundant.
The method of texture baking creates one texture per triangle on the meshes involved. This is very inefficient for storage and use of the scene - again bear in mind the original intended purpose. It wasn't for texture baking to export to games etc, but specifically to allow lighting effects to be baked into the old real-time solid view in tS.
HTH!

Maybe it shouldn't be advertised as such then. |

hmmm, this is a feature I wish it had though, would be good for games if it worked properly, ie made a texture for each face of a scene, would take a while, but handy for some content I create in my work |

Yup.. im agree baking textures is a deal! I saw few walktrough proyects maded with Vray from max with Global Illumination and are simply amazing... About the Trueplay Real time shader are cool but you need a 6600 or better to see the effect.. with backing textures just with a tnt you can see global illumination effects..
The pros of Baking are better image quality and better performance..
The cons the baking texture are not realtime.. so you cannot change the location of any object.. but that is not common on a walktrough.. or
So i vote for Baking textures on Vray.. :)
And more.. i think Trueplay must have another version with settings just for walktrought and optimized for.. so you add settings like disable the ground.. add default settings ... |
