The problem is, you are making the mistake of confusing it having been "released" with it actually being freely available to those who have paid for it.

Not that it is your fault, I think there are many people (including myself) who have made that same mistake.

The situation currently is that Caligari appear to be managing the availability of the downloads to prevent to much stress being put on the servers, so in effect we are being told that "you will just have to wait your turn".

Unfortunately, we are not being told how long we might have to wait - and so, if you don't receive your email, you have no idea if it is because it hasn't been sent, it has been filered as spam or just hasn't got to you for some other reason. So - you could be waiting days after you should have been using it to receive an email which might never arrive.

To my mind the management of the release has been shall we say "less than perfect"!

Do see my other thread posted some hours ago this morning :)

We are going to try and put out some info as to when groups will receive emails - BUT that needs to wait for the office to open, in another half hour or so.

And we can only release that info on the understanding it is provisional - emails get delayed by mail servers, spam filtering, virus checks, as well as the fact that we will send mails as fast as we can, which may turn out to be either faster or slower than we expect (servers going well, we send more mails; servers running slow, mails will get delayed).

So if we release this info, and people mail saying "The forum post said such and such a time and now its 4 hours later than that and still no email!" - well, then we can't release the info...

I'd like to provide that "rough guide" so everyone can have some idea of when to start checking their emails, but would ask if we do that, that you please treat it as a rough guide, and know we will be doing all we can to adhere to it, and to update it when we can, and please don't worry if things don't hit the guide times exactly :)

See, if we release the rough guide then have to field hundreds of "its hours later and still no email" - well it will seriously delay us getting through processing the emails. And I'll never convince anyone to release that sort of info again for future releases too.

So, hopefully we can all work together, and we can do this, if I can get it approved - we'll give a rough guide / timeline for general groups; you agree not to bombard us with questions or complaints if things don't work out exactly as in that info.

Let me know if we have a deal :) I just want to find a way of easing the wait, without slowing down the work we are doing here, and I think we can find a way to do that! :)

Thanks!

Tom

Tom, the Mail its a formality (*dont know if that have sense) if you send e-mails is because you have the download ready.. so recive or not the e-mail its the same.. just saying (yes, the download are open) and 7.5 users on the forum can enter to their client accounts and download truespace.. And those who dont enter on the forum maybe knows the news by the e-mail ...

Just thinking..:)

Tom,

Thanks for those words. Maybe you can help me. I formated recently my computer and lost the URL to get access to my account. How can I recover that information?

Thanks...

The email is not a formaility unless you own TS7 - for those of use who upgraded from pre 7.0 versions, we need the email because it contains our serial numbers, without which TS7.5 cannot be used.

Tom G - look forward to hearing when the "guesstimate" will be of when I might be able to think about even compntemplating the fact that I should consider asking whether my download might be ready ;)

The thing which annoys most is payment was taken 6 days ago !!!!!

It's kind of funny - I can get in to my download page, the 7.5 download is listed, the money is and has been out of my credit card account, but I can't download - must be 'locked'. I guess it wouldn't work without the email serial # anyway - but at least I could read the PDF (slobber, drool...)

The email is more than formality - it has serial number, and it also will mean your download is "unlocked"

The unlocking and the email will happen at the same time. Now, since it could be days for some (I dont know at hte moment) before they can download, it would be nice to spare them checking their mail every 20 minutes.

After all, can you expect your email today, or in three days? Knowing when to look could spare a lot of hardship, which is what I hope to do here :)

Going into the download site and seeing if it works yet will be equally frustrating. So, do let me know if that info would be useful :)

Thanks!

Tom

Tom,

I think a bit of explanation is due as to why, having been able to take my money very quickly last Friday, Caligari find it so difficult to send me the email with my serial number and allow me to download the product I have already paid for.

Why will this take (up to) several days?

Dream on Tom - you know that won't happen!

I don't get this insane impatientness - some people are just going to make themselves ill!! You'll get it when you get it, you know it'll be soon. Why the 'must have it now' panic? I'm excited to play with it too, but a few days more isn't going to make any difference.

Am I being too laid back? :)

Hi bigbigblue,

This was addressed in an earlier posting.

1) Charging starts early as we do it manually. It takes some days (even weeks) to get through all the orders. It is slower to do the charging than to do the downloads. If we do not charge in advance, what happens is that you could have downloaded 4 days ago, but weren't able to as we hadn't got around to charging you until today.

As noted in the email where we notified people we were charging, we do so to avoid delays.

2) The software and downloads and email process all takes time, above and beyond development time. It takes time to work through everything, and that is what is happening now.

It so happens that on our last day of preparations, bugs were found, and it added an extra 12 to 20 hours on getting the release version all ready. It couldn't be predicted. The delay was noted on the Captain's Blog.

We could email everyone all at once, the server would crash, we'd bring it up, everyone would restart their downloads, the server would crash, we'd bring it back up, everyone would restart their downloads.... repeat ad naseum.

So it is faster actually to stagger things and spread it out.

Those two aspects taken together explain why charging started last week (note started last week - not everyone will have been charged yet I would guess, as it is a slow process), and why people will be waiting for their download to come around.

HTH!

Wicked Witch - yes, I am thinking this may be where more information just counts against us - it all depends on how everyone approaches things.

I am quite serious that if we are going to get bombarded by mails, it will cause problems and slow us down significantly.

So maybe we ought to not publish the info as it might just make things worse, and leave it at "you will know when to download as your email will have turned up"

I am trying to find a solution that will work for all :) What does everyone think?

HTH!

Caligari is not General Motors so they don't have Thousands of employees, Bandwidth, Pipe size, Work cued, there has to be controls on how many can access the pipe at once. The work has to be staggered! The good new is it's coming. Now you know what a Piranah feels like.
TomG, maybe give us a timeframe on when you think all downloaders should be done.

Although I'm one of the "insane, impatient' ones - I have to say, don't do anything that would slow down the flow.

hmmm, im getting rather impatient now! lol, I dont want to start any new work until I get the new version, it just isnt worth it I am some what confused that if there are so many purchasers of users capable of bombarding your servers, then why can Caligari not afford more bandwith just for a few days?

Tom,

I would say, if it would hold up the process, then don't fool with estimated download schedules. If the information is readily available for distribution, then go for it.

THanks to you and everyone at Caligari for their effort,

Frootee

Patience is a virtue ....

It is also :

1. a card game (in the UK anyway, known as Solitaire elsewhere)

2. an 8 letter word;

3. a noun;

4. a female given name;

5. a synonym of "Resignation"

6. a kind of "dock" plant - also known as monk's rhubarb; and

7. from the latin " Patientia" meaning "patient"

additions welcome - especially funny ones...

Hi all,

Going to be easy to give you the timeline for the different user groups :)

All users should be emailed today. At the worst, we expect some to not get their mail until early in the hours tomorrow morning.

Emails should start coming thick and fast to many people in about an hour or so from now, then continue that way until the end of today / early tomorrow.

Sorry for the delays, these have been unexpected, the plan was that everyone would be installing and firing up tS7.5 on Tuesday at the latest. We haven't liked the wait either, but it is ending soon.

Apologies for the delays, and thank you for your patience,

Tom

Thanks for the update Tom

In my case I happy looking at the manual right now, wondering what I’ve let my self in for, looks like I got quite a leaning curve ahead. I posted a thank you in my other thread about the manual, (visitor section), but I don’t think its appeared yet.
