I'm having trouble launching 7.5 on my machine. It gets to the splash screen and hangs. Ironically, I've gotten it to work once by trying to kill it from task manager. Since I don't see anyone else having this problem, the possible causes that come to my mind are: wrong version of XP (SP1), wrong version DX9 (?) or perhaps that this system isn't on a network. (Does 7.5 try to connect to a network?) This system is an Asus A8N-VM CSM with Opteron 175, 2GB ram, nVidia GeForce 6150 integrated video.

Obviously it could be any number of things. Have you already tried updating your drivers (video / motherboard / etc)?

If that doesn't work, maybe post your dxdiag results (Start->Run "dxdiag") and perhaps something in it will ring a bell with someone on the forums.

The nVidia 6150 is an integrated on board card, does it support shader model 2.0?

You might solve your problem and would definitely get a huge performance increase if you installed a 7600 or 7900 series dedicated video card in your machine.

Check the video driver version for your on-board graphics. The hang at Splash screen sounds excatly like the problem encountered with the tS7 launch where the version of NVidia drivers at the time were flawed causing this problem.

NVidia have fixed it now and the tS7.5 readme describes the minimum driver version that should be used. From memory I recall 83.21 or above, but check...... I could be wrong about that version number!

Also sometimes the new drivers introduce new bugs, so sometimes the newest driver doesn't always work with all apps. Sometimes it can help to revert to an older version or one of the various nVidia beta drivers. Which was something I had to do for my Laptop, back when the 7.0 release happened like Bobbins mentioned. I actually had to go back to the 70 series drivers, until I found that the 84.15 driver worked best for my laptop's 6600go.

I can't remember the name of the website, but there are user communities that rate and write hacked installers for the different nVidia releases and test and list the known problems for each of the releases.

You could also try launching trueSpace 7.5 while holding down the CTRL key. This will bring up a dialog box that will allow you to choose between DirectX mode, OpenGL and wireframe. OpenGL and wireframe wouldn't give you all of the shiny new features that tS7.5 offers, but it will at least let you know that the problem is your gfx card drivers if it starts up in one of the other two modes for you.

No, you are not the only one.

When I try and run it, it finallly times out and gives a "failed to initalize kernel subsystem" message.

The funny thing is, when I click OK for it to shut down, it flashes up the design window.

I have also seen it hang and when looking at the task manager (If I can get it to open) Truespace is using 100%cpu. I have to reboot and try again but after a while it will hang again with very high cpu percentages of 95 to 100 percent.

Drivers have been checked and changed etc.

I have a geforce 6800GT with 256mb ram, Athlon 3500+, 1GB ram etc.

I am currently playing with the animation side of things with the standard models in the library.

I have made sure all other apps etc are closed down and checked that they truely are closed down yet still I know that I will not get more than 30 minutes before the cpu hits silly heights and the hard drive churns like a nutter.

I will be emailing support with more details myself as it is not stable on my pc nor is it stable on a friends pc (his is a much more up to date system than mine) he is playing with the same features (animation ) as myself.

I want to add that other than the obvious tearing my hair out constant rebooting of my pc that I have had to do all day I love the app and the animation really does look even more powerful than at first seemed. Well done on that matter.

Cheers

mykyl1966: I don't know if you done this already or not, but try turning off the bridge. For me, the workspace flies with the bridge turned off. Personally I only turn the bridge on when I need to switch views to do something, then I turn it right back off.

Thank you. I will give that a try. Would be good to find at least something that causes it.

Cheers :jumpy:

I will make sure that our tech support guys check out your hardware/software configuration. They will contact you shortly. If we can figure the problem out right here on Forum, that would be even better.

Switched of the bridge and same issue. Extra thing I noticed is when I kill TS from the task manager, explorer then goes to 100% cpu and stays there and my whole pc freezes. (I can only see this if I open task manager quickly enough).

I will leave TS for now until a solution is found as forcing my pc to power down is not good for my hard drives etc. So far thats at least a dozen times today probably more.

Thank you Roman for responding.

Cheers

@Moogaloonie and tscorpio

Check that you have directx 9.0c .

you can check the version by going to

Start --

Run --

type dxdiag in the box and press ok .

first tab will give details of your dx version .

Display tab will give you Graphics card details and driver versions.

Check as well that your XP OS is fully service packed and up to date.

If it isnt resolved , it would also be good to fire off an email to support as well , its sometimes easier to handle problems individually rather than on threads here on the forums.

@ mykyl1966 send off that report to support and if you wanted to post the details and steps here and see if others can replicate it.

Ok. I have now managed to get it acting more stable. Been fiddling for the past hour and not so much as a peep of nastiness. I decided to go even older on the gfx drivers. I am now using 84.43 Nvidia drivers and that seems to have sorted the issue.

Cheers

I'm still using 78.01 drivers myself. I've found bugs with every version since then with my graphics card. I haven't tried the very latest, but if your problems are any indication, I think I'll be sticking with 78.01.

Glad you got it working. :)

I'm using DX9.0c (4.09.000.0904) according to dxdiag. As I mentioned, this system is niether online, nor on a network. It may be some time before I'm able to update from SP1 to whatever they are on now. It should be easy enough to upgrade my drivers as I can just put those on a stick and move them over. I'll try to do that this week and see if anything changes.

These days it's nearly impossible to keep a system that's not connected to the outside world working reliably :(

I finally got 7.5 up and running.

I thought it was a upgrade that would bring ".1" up to ".5" so I installed it on top of my existing version. I guess it was resulting in conflicts. I ended up uninstalling 7.5 & 7.1, then reinstalled 7.5 clean.

For DX9c, don't forget that the Windows Auto Update doesn't take care to download the really newest DX version. I had DX9c installed. From August last year. But the newest version is from february this year. And both DX versions are named as DX9c.

Gave me a big headache with a gameengine until i found this out ...

I just wanted to let everyone know that I updated my nVidia drivers and Truespace launches just fine now:banana: I haven't had any time to play with it yet, and wouldn't you know it, another program I use also just had a long awaited upgrade release made available ;) It sure looks nice though!
