When I use area lights in vray with shadows enabled, the shadows they cast are extremly noisy. I can't seem to fix them no matter what settings I use.
The shadows look like shadowmaps, which I thought were disabled in vray.
Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? |

In the Link Editor (LE), find the Area object - this is the area light and you need lights enabled in the LE to see it. In the Expanded aspect of the panel is a setting for AreaSamples - try increasing that value.
Click the orange square on the Area object to enter it.
Click the orange square on the AreaLight object to enter it.
On the TSCompatibleLight panel you should see the ShadowEnabled box ticked. Below that is the ShadowMapSize dialogue - try increasing that value. |

If you follow the excellent advice given by Bobbins (thanks, I was also looking for the solution to the same problem) remember to disconnect the connector (that goes from the left frame to AreaSamples) by clicking on it first. Otherwise you can't increase the value. For me, increasing from 1 (default) to 30 worked fine, at 20 there still was some perceivable noise). After you have increased the value, reconnect by clicking and holding on the tiny red triangle and drag to the left frame. Then it's automatically updated. |

I am a bit naieve and having trouble.
In LE developer view, I drill into the AreaLight, & edit the TSCompatibleLight panel. Unlinking AreaSamples allows me to change the AreaSamples value, but upon relinking, it resets to 1 again.
This sort of thing happens to me quite a lot in the LE. |

@ Lee. I reproduced your problem. It resets to 1 if you connect starting to pull the connector from the triangle at the outer frame (left). You should instead start from the triangle at the floating panel (so pull the connector from right to left, to the outer frame) then the value that you inserted remains.
I hope this helps. |

Thanks for the extra info.
A difference in connecting triangles via the left or right, eh .
Lets see if I get this: When I drag a triangles connector to the LHS, it creates a new triangle for a new export attribute, e.g. 'areaSamples1'.
I am guessing this is probably of no use because I do not have anything setup to read the new attribute.
But relinking the LHS triangle which I previously disconnected from, seems only possible if I drag a connector from it on the LHS to the AreaSamples panel, and not the other way around. My LHS triangle will not play ball when I dangle a connector over it.
Gees, I guess the devil is in the details, or in this case, the triangles .
You guys must have all the well behaved ones, lol. |
