Sounds awesome, too bad I don't have tS installed on a machine that is connected.

Yes, do please sign up! Remember it is only fun, so don't worry if you think it is "too much pressure", as there is no pressure at all.

I'll have to go an pick something that would make a good item to model in 5 minutes (given that people will be able to practice between now and Thursday to nail down their workflow)...

So, send in your name if you want to take part!

Thanks!

Tom

Sure i want!!

5 minutes is very short time to make something "interesting".. 10 minutes its enough to make a good object imo..

2) i suggest leave this thread open, poor Norm must acept all this post :D

Tom i must send you an e-mail or whit this post its ok?

We could do 10 mins - the object will be very simple for this first run though, and I'll have it posted today so you'll have a few days to work out what tools to use in what sequence and practice it. 10 mins is actually trickier to decide the object than 5, so we'll see what I come up with :)

For taking part, yes please, you MUST send the email to me. It's the only way I will be able to manage it for sure, forum postings will not be reliable for taking entries!

Thanks!

Tom

Hi all,

So this Thursday we hope to have the first live speed modeling contest - more of a race - during Thursday Night Live!

So far Prodigy has signed up to take part this week, with others expressing an interest in later weeks. We do need one more contestant for this week - do please email me at thomas@caligari.com if you want to take part (don't just post here in case I miss your posting).

And the challenge this week is to have 10 minutes to make as good a version as you can of a headset, our sample image is here:

http://itreview.belproject.com/media/1/20050311-ltb-headphones.gif

Note that it should be a headset, so should include a microphone as well as the headphones.

Naturally we are not expecting a picture perfect reproduction of what is in that image done in 10 minutes. The challenge is to make it as "good" as you can - try and ensure you have the full shapes in there, and then see how much detail you can add in the 10 minute deadline.

You may either try to reproduce the headset in the image above as accurately as you can, or you may take creative license and "design" your own (naturally just a tiny rounded cylinder as a "universal translator of the future that sits inside your ear out of site" wouldn't be a winner, so some common sense would be required there, no using artistic license to make it too easy!)

You may practice over the next 24 hours or so before the challenge begins. On the night you can only start from primitives - no adding items you've saved in a library, or even ones in the tS library. You can start separate pieces from separate primitives, just that every piece must start from a primitive (adjusting the primitive using the panel options for latitude, longitude, slices etc is permitted).

But you can plan what tools to use and your workflow, and have rehearsed your moves over and over if you like, that's fine.

And that's it! It's all just fun remember, the "rules" above are just to keep things on an even keel so everyone knows what they are doing, not to turn this into a complex contest :)

So one more sign up for this week - who will it be? Get in touch and take part! And then tomorrow night - we'll see you there!

Thanks!

Tom

Hi all,

Just bringing this back up to the top - Thursday Night Live! is now tonight, it being Thursday and all ;)

And at the time of writing, Prodigy has already won the live speed modeling challenge, as he has no challenger!

We can't let him simply walk to victory, we must have someone to race against him in producing the headset model! Remember it's all in fun, so don't worry about "I can't do that" or "I'm not good enough", it's all for a laugh so jump in! We could pick someone on the night, but if anyone wants to sign up, do please email me at thomas@caligari.com.

Note that if we get no challenger, I would ask if Prodigy is still willing to go ahead and do his speed modeling, and at least then we will get to watch him at work and see how he tackles this particular project (could be a good way to learn some new tips and techniques for the forum speed modeling challenge).

Tonight should be a lot of fun!

We'll see you there!

Nowherebrain would have been a nice contender but I think he had other plans tonight. To be honest I look forward to seeing just Prodigy model. His speed is amazing! So either way it will be enjoyable.

Well, we've got to give Prodigy someone to beat. It's been about 2 years since I tried my hand at speed modeling and I'm not very fast in the workspace. If nobody else will step forward though, I'll give it a go. I'll get smoked, but I'll give it a go, lol. :p

If someone else steps up though, I'll sit back and watch. :)

So we'll have 10min to make a pair of headphones then?

Sheesh, I guess I better practice a couple of times so I can at least get more then a cube made.

Dele I've seen your gallery of items and you would be a fine opponent. If no one else steps to the plate I'll back you 99.999%...my money is still on Prodigy:D
He wins t-shirts!

Great Dèlè!

You bring me an idea.. what's happend if this was not a "Challenge" but yes 2 Speed Modeling sesions!?!?!

In any challenge are always a winner and a looser.. and that is not good (i think)..

And both teachers be always winners! :o

well I don't think this is a competition per se, it's a way to challenge 2 people to put something together in 10 minutes, not really one against another.

I think Dele is a speed typist so I am sure he can whip up a procedural set of headphones really quick!

Go Dele Go! Go Prodigy Go!

Hey, that's a good idea there Froo. Can we use scripts? Then I might be able to give him a run for his money. jk :p

It's all in good fun. I certainly will not feel at all bad when Prodigy leaves me in the dust. :)

Yeah make a 3D recording of the object and then run a script to make the replay speed faster. :D

Kena,

You missed a fun evening! I think Roman pretended to be asleep at the end. Thats when the mischief started, and a Roman avatar sprung to life at the same time!:)

The new Thursday Night truePlace is very nice. Dele and Prodigy both are excellent modelers and put on a good show.

Roman needs a new mic it was just impossible to understand him. Sennheiser make nice sets hint hint.

I hope they update the blog because he talked about many things. I think there were some screen captures made so you'll probably be seeing them here soon.

If the content is there this event should grow. Pass the word...
