Got some more done. The eyes are just temporary placeholders [the other 1's on a seperate layer, hidden so as not to get in the way].

1 thing I've learnt doing this is it's not always the parts/areas that you expect to be difficult that will end up taking you the most time. So far, I think the cheek area has been the most troublesome. It's still not right. I haven't just got to smooth it out, I've also got to get it the right shape to match the person this model is based on, which is proving a lot more tricky than I was expecting. [Though it would go a lot quicker with that Mirror Modeller improvement I suggested. :)] |

I forget how this thread started Alien, but were you intent on doing this with Nurbs to satisfy your curiosity? I only ever use polygons and SDS. Much quicker ( and yes, I have more realistic heads done this way-my avatar was done the same). I find it clean and easy to work with and, as faces are never truly symmetrical, I do not use mirror Modeller-preferring to tweak it all by hand; |

I switched to poly & SDS around post #21. I tried changing the thread title accordingly [just a few mins ago], but apparently you can't [or at least I can't - Norm, if you read this would you do the honours, please?]
I must admit to still being curious about NURBS, & definitely want to return to them some day, but am sticking with Poly & SDS for the moment.
I will admit that Chrono did have a point in that other thread, about how tS could do with the ability to edit lower/courser SDS levels without losing all changes on higher/finer SDS levels. As I said to him, I don't know if the player SDS can do it, my 9600 isn't fast enough to do more than have a quick fiddle about in the player, when I get a new card I'll investigate it further.
In hindsight, there's probably a bit more I could have done at the base poly level that might have made things go a bit quicker [for example, the ears & neck are pure SDS]. However, if I go back to the base level & start again, I'll lose everything I've done at this SDS level & be almost back to square 1.
<edit>
After some fiddling about, it just hit me why it was so awkward to fix the bumpy/out-of-place bits. Although I was working on the 1st layer of SDS, I had a 2nd 1 turned on. This is great for letting you see what your model will look like smoothed with the next SDS level [if you're using the Mirror Modelling tool - which is why I like it], but it makes it a lot harder to see exactly what's wrong & needs fixing.
I found the simple solution to this is to come out of point edit mode, then re-enter [as my trick for getting rid of the PE widget also hides the SDS level balls, but they reappear when you re-enter PE] & select the higher SDS level, then delete that SDS layer. Having done this, & with Solid outline display mode enabled it's much easier to see exactly which verts need moving to fix probs.

I haven't given up on this project, & hope to get back to it in the very near future [if nothing else goes wrong!].
The reason I've not been around for the last week or so is because of a failing hard drive. It's replaced now, & did a lot of sorting out [which was really overdue & couldn't believe the amount of stuff I'd accumulated!]. It started off with what I thought was going to be a simple upgrade - put a smaller [40GB Western Digital], faster HDD I had spare in & transfer my C, D, E, & F partitions on to it, do abit of a reshuffle of stuff on the old [60GB Maxtor], & end up with more room... at least that was the plan.
I got part way through & realised my Maxtor was becoming slower & slower. Apparently [I didn't know this, seems like a relatively new thing], if XP notices too many I/O errors from an IDE drive it changes the connection speed to a slower 1 to compensate. In the end it ended up all the way down to PIO mode! I haven't had a HDD that slow since I was using drives smaller than 1GB!
As there was no way all my stuff would fit on the 40GB WD, I had to go & buy another drive, & by the time I realised I couldn't wait until I had more money, it was too late to order 1 online & have it arrive before the weekend, so I had to go get 1 locally, meaning I got neither the brand I'd wanted for my next HDD [had to get a Samsung instead of the WD 1 I wanted], nor 1 anywhere near as big as I had had my sights on.
Ugh! :( Anyway, that's mostly sorted now, just have 1 more upgrade to do. Got my new X800 GTO today [ordered it a day or so before I realised the Maxtor was on its last legs], hopefully that'll install with no probs, though the 15 pin D-sub connector looks a bit odd. Looks fine from the back-end, but the part on the inside is only a fraction of the size of all other d-sub connectors I've seen. At 1st, I thought it was just some sort of "place-holder" meant to fill a gap in the metal back plate, but on closer inspection it does have the requisite number of connections to the PCB. Hopefully everything will work ok, so I can get back to working on my project. |

I was wondering about you. I thought maybe you were having another bad tooth day. But then I think I saw you earlier riding a TriBeast. |

Good to hear you're OK - I'd been wondering where you had gone. Sorry to hear you had system problems - that sucks, but good that you were able to sort it. Welcome back!:D |

Thanks. I just hope nothing else goes wrong, as aside from money for food I'm skint until Sunday. :) |
