does anybody else get a error and lock down when you do a boolean?

Booleans haven't crashed on me since 7.1... but then again it depends on your geometry and settings. The legacy "model" side tools are pretty buggy for the most part and there isn't any plans to fix them. So it's definitely a case of use them at your own risk. In otherwords, save before clicking on Model.... ;)

Of course, you can guess my opinion on booleans from my signature... :p

Boolean isn't bad at all. It just depends what you want to do. Sometimes it is simply quicker to bool and then clean up the geometry (reconnect "floating" areas to the rest of the mesh) than to model it.

It has its pitfalls though. Boolean operation can fail. And it doesn't only happen in TS. It's a general problem with boolean. It also creates a not this useful geometry in some cases. With lots of unneeded edges. And the work to clean this up can take longer than to model it without booling. The reason why so much people call it evil :)

A few tips that might help you.

- Save your scene before you try to bool.
- Take care that no face or edge of the target mesh has the same location than the faces or edges of the bool mesh. It may work with very basic shapes. But with more complex geometry you may get a destroyed result. With partially flipped faces for example.
- By default boolean removes not needed edges at the whole mesh. Uncheck "Delete Edges" when you don't want this.
- When it fails, try to move the bool object by a little amount away and try again. You can paint your bool object with a different colour. Which makes it easy then to select this meshpart and move it back. Then clean it up.
- When it still fails, try to decrease the boolean identity, which can be changed in the bool panel.
- When it even then fails, think about a modeling solution instead booling :P

Good advice Tiles. :)

Booleans are pretty useful when you need to cut holes and for quick de-triangulation. ;)

The bridge tool on Workspace is another useful way to make holes.
Ex:
Add loops around where you need to punch out the hole, inset (bevel tool w/ quad mode checked), do the same thing on the other side, then use the bridge tool to connect the two inset faces.

A good piece of advice for whether you used boolean or bridge tool, make sure to add extra loops around both ends of the hole so that it subdivides nice.

all I was doing was cutting a sphere in half with a cube. I have done it many times before..not sure why now it does not work
