I'm having trouble grasping what the fundamental difference is between Workspace and Model views in 7.5. It seems like there are modeling tools in workspace view (i'm still looking for some of them) but the view doesn't seem to be very conducing to manipulating objects (for example it seems more difficult to move an object around the scene than in model view.) That makes me wonder if the difference is a workflow one where model view should be used for mostly modeling, then using workspace for applying materials. Am I on the right track, or out in left field?

Wigmo,
TS7.5 is in transition, the WS view is where, eventually, when everything is ported over to the new architecture, everything will be done. I, personally, feel more comfortable doing some things on the Model side, but as I understand it, the Model side will be phased out when this 'porting' is complete. My thoughts are that with each subsequent release, more and more of the tools (and new ones besides) will be moved over so we can become familiar with them in their new 'incarnation' on the WS side. As such, it will be better to try to do and learn as much as you can in WS, while 'weaning' yourself off of Model side.
Directly to your stated problem, I find the widget on WS very effective for moving things around - can you be more specific?

So in 6.6 (previous versions as well) I would only need to select an object, and drag it around my scene. In 7.5 workspace mode I can only seem to use the widget to move an object, and only one direction at a time with reliable results. If I click on the little yellow triangles between widget axis the movement is jerky and rather unresponsive. Rotating an object is not very fluid either. |

My approach is to NOT compare the two and try to learn the workSpace side. Unless you want to return to the Modeler in the future why bother unless you need tools not available yet. The new tools are WAY better and more advanced then Modeler. I used to crash often in Modeler. The edge loop tool alone is a fantastic help.
I think the sliders for the visible grid and points in it's various places needs improvement. They sometimes keep me from noticing if I'm in point edit mode. However I find my modeling skills have improved using the new tools. (They started out as "They suck" and worked their way up to "They kinda suck");) |

I haven't experienced any 'jerkiness' - is it possible you have 'grid snap' on? Also, in the past, I remember just dragging in WS, without using the widget, would move the selected object, unfortunately, when I just tried it today, it was set (somehow..) to scale - if I find how to set back to 'move', (probably something I overlooked) I'll post here.
hope this helps |

Got it - to move selected objects by dragging in workspace (not using widget) make sure 'Move' is selected - it's under the First drop-down in the big WS toolbar at the bottom of your screen (the one with the WS primitives) |

I'm sure it's possible that I have snap grid on. Not sure how I would go about checking.
*edit* I found it the grid snapping icon which was causing my problems. Thx. |

Look at the next to last drop-down in that same big WS toolbar - you'll find an icon with a wireframe grid, a cube and red lines - if it's highlighted, it's on, click to turn off

I posted a truespace 6.7 layout in the free stuff thread upon release of 7.5, maybe you could try that until you find your way around. It has all the model icons (that are in workspace) laid out in a workspace view exactly as they are in model side.
So, best of both worlds; new features and code under the familiar skin of model side. Good for easing you into the new side...:D |

You can hotkey move, rotation and scale just as you can in model view. I think they are hotkeyed by default to the same as they were in model view too (and model view means "same as in tS6.6" of course).
So Z will activate the Move tool, X will activate Rotate, and C will activate Scale.
This is the same setup I had in Model / tS6.6, where I would just hit the relevant key on the keyboard, then mouse moves outside of the object would control those functions, with no need to use the widget.
HTH!
