A couple of weeks ago I did som test renders on my laptop, and ts7.1 worked perfectly ( havn't installed ts7.5 on it yet )

(** below the picture I explain a possible cause for my problem)

Today when I was preparing for a customer visit, trueSpace seemed to work fine until I tried to render.

For some reason when rendering, the CPU usage doesn't go above 5% ?!

Tried resetting trueSpace, deleted default.ctx, and in the startscene created a simple plane and cube.

Still below 5% cpu-usage, both in lightworks and vray

6735

(**)

Now, I have been doing my share of support, and I'm not going to say

"I havn't done anything, nothing has changed on the computer..." ;)

I know that I tested something stupid...in the taskmanager I altered the trueSpace process priority to LOW, to be able to continue working with other stuff....and I do believe I got the "Blue screen of death"...

And I'm not sure I tested trueSpace after that....?

Now the trueSpace priority is NORMAL in the taskmanager...but still..?

Will try to reinstall everything this weekend, but I'm curious if anyone encountered something like this? Or can explain it?

Not to state the obvious but-

Core2 Quad EE QX6700

How many vertexes make a cube?

Maybe try a scene with many complex objects and turn off Multithreading to get your CPU working hard?

Why? :)

I say this Shike because although in the header you say your machine slows down, in the body you only say that your CPU isn't being fully used. Some people just like to see the CPU being fully loaded

I altered the trueSpace process priority to LOW, to be able to continue working with other stuff

Your whole machine starts chugging when you load TS7.1 even though the scene is minimal objects is that what you mean? Turn off Multithreading?

BIOS update for your mobo to help dual CPU running maybe? BIOS recognises your dual CPU? What's your operating system? Is D3D updated to the latest runtime? Have you installed the latest WHQL mobo drivers? Questions questions sorry :)

Ah, I probably was a bit fuzzy in my explanation :o

I have two computers:

My big and lovely QUAD:

It's still lightning fast :D And yes, you're right, when rendering a cube on that the CPU doesn't reach 100% before it's finished. :)

The problem is my Laptop, IBM Thinkpad T60P (dualcore?):

And it's pretty fast for a laptop.

Before the incident, rendering a cube would go so fast I'd have problems taking a screenshot of it. ;)

But now, the screenshot you see is when Vray has been spending about 20seconds on that simple cube. The Vray renderblocks where actually slooooowly painted on the screen and not more than 1-5% cpu where used....didn't matter if I changed the multithread settings.

Lightworks had the same result....or lack of result :(

(Note: I tested rendering with Mentalray in my CAD system, and it worked ok with 100% CPU usage)

I'm mostly curious to what actually happened

If any files got corrupted at the bluescreen crash...I would've expected ts7 to stop functioning or the renderengines to crash...not slow down.

Or is the PRIORITY=LOW somehow, hidden in the magical registry, telling windows that Lightworks and VRay now can't use more than 5% CPU power???

(Since the ts7 process now states normal priority...also tested to shift it to high and back to normal, no change)

Havn't reinstalled tS yet (might try ts7.5 instead, but the laptop is crappy when it comes to directX.. I can't even play any new games on it ;) )

You can download the latest DirectX runtime drivers from:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/DirectX-9.0c-Redistributable.shtml

BSOD might be drivers Shike so crossing fingers for you :)

New games though usually include these DirectX runtime libraries/drivers so we can't be sure if these will help - but nothing to lose.

Standard Disclaimer: if you see smoke I was never here :)

Aaaaaaaaaaargh !

Note:

It's not Caligari or trueSpace my frustration is aimed at, it's the

worst software-maker ever: Microsoft

@weaveribm:

Thanks for the suggestions, made me check everything again and I noticed that one of the things I've stated was wrong :o

After uninstalling and reinstalling tS7.11 on the laptop and also installing ts7.5 I came up with the following.

I lowered the Priority for tS7 during a VRay-render....and it ONLY affected VRay. Lightworks does use 100% CPU (both cores) but needed bigger scene to actually see that. :o

Soooooooo:

Vray1.0 in ts7.11 still doesn't use over 1-5% of the CPU.

Vray1.5 in ts7.5 "Modeler" same problem.

Vray1.5 in ts7.5 "Workspace" (the new thing) actually performs perfect 100% Dual core CPU !

I can only guess that somewhere in the horrible mess called the "Windows registry" there's now some priority setting ULTRALOW for Vray (same in both ts7.11 and ts7.5)

and that the new WorkspaceVRay render actually has some new process for this and isn't affected?

Anyone knows where in the registry I might find this?

Can't see the VRay process in the taskmanager so the priority must be hiding in the registry??

Vray1.0 in ts7.11 still doesn't use over 1-5% of the CPU.

This is normal behaviour Shike on a fast system. CPU usage depends on the scene

There's a benchmark or two in here try one of those to stretch your CPU's maybe?

Yup, I made one of them..the bad "lot's of rings" one ;)

Reason I didn't want to do the bigger benchmarks was that VRay took so extremely long for just a simple cube. >2 minutes for a cube with simple lights, without GI and Caustics...it should only take between 10-20sec total as with Lightworks.

(and the screenshot showed how "far" it had gotten in 20sec, only about 10-15% of the screen)

But for your sake I decided to test a benchmark today...

...and now VRAY WORKS AGAIN !?!?!??! :jumpy:

The renderblocks swosh out on the screen as it should, and it's as fast/faster than Lightworks just as it should be !! :D

And it can use both CPU cores up to 100% instead of being strangled at 5%

So, problem solved !

Solution: ??????????????? Waiting a couple of days until the evil troll inside my computer decided to leave ?????????

Good work!

Torquemada benchmark. No one expects it :)
