Attached AVI file is another "playing around" :) with VRay Material Editor ME
Used the mapped metal and Displacement normal map to light up only the three figures while the background was supposed to stay about the same level.
- turning around the infinity lights would do this job in connection with the ME settings
- wiped over shortly the two spots to show the difference
The aura you will partly see around the lady, especially when she is darker, is also result of that shader :) |

Extending the above scenery ME setup with an additional VRay transparency shader the change is like in these pictures.
Just shows first and last picture equivalent to above movie.
This way you can fake developing process of a black and white negativ into a positiv picture. |

Cool Emma! Looks like this may be a good optional method for photo restoration.

Thanks for sharing this experimentation with us Emma.
This is very interesting. This technique of yours would be excellent for use in those cases where one wants to develop a genuine Patina Effect on bronze, copper, silver, or even old wood surfaces within their scenes. Great technique!
Thanks!

Thanks for your comments, seems that at least three seem to be interested. :)
Thank heaven I can upload 5 files to a forum entry so that would be enough to give you the details how I managed it and from where you can go on experimenting if interest continues.
First of all be mentioned again the light setting as I showed in the entry above. In a final animation this has to be solved by script, timer or whatever mechanism to change the direction of a strong light source that moves towards the object.
All I needed first was a picture which I simply scanned from an old photogravure from 1898. Resolution for this sample was not high, therefore you will recognize the pixels inside the picture area.
7987
Left is the original picture which I copied into a second one. There now I filled out the figures with white (255,255,255) and the background with black (0,0,0) and converted into greyscale ! <--- this is all work I did with another program than truespace by the way
After creating a cube the material was set up in ME with the color first
7988
Setting was done with 1/1 repeat and with UV the material was mapped to a cube so the picture would fill the front face.
Next now was the mapped metal shader
7990
As can be seen ambient and roughness have a texture set for mapping purposes, all others only have their params set/unset. Here the greyscaled image is used.
Last one then was the normal map shader, which also got the greyscale image as mapping texture
7989
For the second posting above the transparency shader was added to the above setup.
7991
There is one specialtiy here to mention. When changing the original image to black / white I left out the floor and the chair. That is the reason you can see it lightly on the glassy images. |

Leaves just to add another entry due to maximum of 5 images. If you look in the animation you should notice an aura on some areas around the lady.
7992
The secret is that these areas are not completly white or black but light grey.

Thank you Emma,
This additional information saves me hours of fumbling with settings!
Nice of you to share this with us all, and I'm sure many of us here will be referring to this thread in the future for such effects aside from the few of us who happened to have the time to notice it this time.
I'm sure it will be a great source of future reference to many.
Thanks again, and keep up the experimenting, you're doing very well!:)
