This is probably the stupidest question I have ever asked in a 3d software forum. How do I save a scene? I'm using ts7.51 and I'm talking about the workspace.

I created a Library place and a window for my stuff and opened that in the stack. I can successfully move objects and images to and from it no problems. However if I right click in my stack view window and select the save RsScn option the mouse pointer goes to the busy hourglass symbol and just stays there. I have to hit ctrl/alt/del and close the program. Restart the program and the thumbnail of my scene is in my window but if I try to load it I get an error message saying something about invalid object.

I tried saving by selecting the 3Dscene in the LE window - same result.

I got rid of an imported object that maybe caused a conflict - same result.

I tried loading a pre-existing scene from one of the default libraries and attempted to save that to my stackview window - same result.

Normally in these circumstances I would refer to the manuals index as a starting point for solving my problem but tS 7.51 does not have an index for its manual. Instead I have to guess which chapter in a 1000pg pdf I might find some help. After skimming through some sections on the UI and workspace tasks I came away none the wiser.

Is this a bug or am I just stupid?

(BTW I don't own another piece of software that does not have an index for its manual. What gives?)

Hi Burnart,

Right click in your Library window in a grey area (not over an existing icon)
and choose "Insert as Scene (RsScn).

Thanks for replying. That is what I did and the effect was as described above program freezes up.

This won't help with your lockup problem but try to create your own custom directory to save scenes in.

Thanks for the mini tute but I'm petty sure I have a viable stackview window from my own library place for saving things into. I have had success with objects and texture maps saving and loading from stackview windows I have created - its the scenes that are freezing things up.

By the sounds of it I am trying to do things the right way so it looks like some kind of bug. I've made no real changes to the environment so a complete uninstall and reinstall is not out of the question. Has anybody else had similar problems that were solved by a reinstall?

I've only had this problem occur after I've installed a new version, loaded a layout from the old version which referenced user created libraries that hadn't been added to a library place in the new version.

Basically each time you install an upgrade or reinstal, you need to re-add the custom library folder again using "create new library place", otherwise tS doesn't know where the reference points too. It should still handle the situation more gracefully, though.

Let me know if that solves your problem. :)

Now that 7.51 has a Files menu, couldn't you just click on File\Save\SceneFiles ?

Seems far easier?

Ha ha! Your probably right I'll try it when I get home tonight - guess I'm too keen to try and do things the new interface way rather than the old fashioned way. Still, the new way is supposed to work.

Just for clarification - I did a complete uninstall of tS7.5 before installing 7.51. Can't remember if I did a restart before the 7.51 install - could that have made a difference?

Forgot to answer Jacks question from earlier - I'm happy with the default layouts at the moment so there was no reloading of old layouts involved. (I figure if there are problems and I do need to reinstall its less traumatic if you have the defaults - in a couple of months I might change my mind.)

When I mentioned the File menu, I meant on the Workspace side-that IS new to 751 compared to 7.5 which had no file menu on the workspace side.

As for restarting after an install...I've seen some windows progs that seem to require a reboot, some don't. But on windows, I always restart the computer-just to be on the safe side. ;)

No sweat Improv I knew what you were referring to - thanks for the input. Just about to head home - see if I can crack this nut.

Careful on the word freeze in this case. I believe I experienced what you did at first to. Here is why:

I create a library place. Now remember a library "place" is a top level scenario. Not sure you even want to do this but there may be times when a new place is needed for a project or such. For most part, you can just create a new library (second level). So I suggest create a library only. Now here is the part I wanted to get to. When you populate the new library, you may be moving around your computer disks and select ts7 directory and you go to import. Well heck it is seeing everything there is to see in the directory. It is not frozen, it is scooting along and eventually you get the import dialog that is, to put it mild, very tall. It has everything it finds in that directory, that can be imported, listed. It is a tall list. That is why ts seemed unresponsive.

If you were to initially select a directory that has only a few possible items for import, the process would go fast and you would not find a "frozen" type state.

I hardly see anyone talking about "projects". Set your layout up how you like. Set your customized toolbars how you like. In the Scene-base library, right-click and insert as project. Use your "Restore to default context" tool to set ts up at its default state. Now go back to Scene-base and double-left-click the saved project. Voila all is how you want it. Remember a scene is just a scene and has not to do with context. A project on the other hand saves pretty much everything about your layout and such. You know this because the thumbnail that is saved, is a whole grab of your primary monitor (if you save project with ts window resized to show background programs behind ... like iExplore or such, thumbnail includes this).

Hope is helpful

Norm thanks for the info it was interesting but I'm not sure that is what was going on. At one point I left the thing with the hourglass going for 20 min and there was still no resolution. The Library place I created initially had nothing in it until I created libraries for it within the library browser. As I said that seemed to work fine because I was able to work with other kinds of data.

Anyway I tried using the new file menu save as suggested by Improv and that worked!

However I still wanted to get the new process to work properly so I did do a complete uninstall followed by a restart and a reinstall followed by another restart before running ts7.51. The first thing I did was use the library browser to navigate to my library place - it immediately recognised the 2 sub-directories I had previously created and I loaded them into the stack view. I then created a basic scene using objects from one of my library folders and successfully (at last!) saved a scene into my other library folder using the rightclick Insert scene method. Finally I wiped the sweat from my tortured brow.

Thanks for all the help and information guys.
