I've been designing this one in my head for a couple months. There are some difficult parts to do so this should be a nice challenge. There is a lot going on so the main focus is to stay focused. Lets get started and let's have Fun! |

With a title like that, I expect this excelent model to have a few friends as they chase each other about in a movie. :D |

Uh oh. Looks like something big is in the works here... :)
Oh hey that's what you said. ;)
The canon reminds me of something I've seen in an animation video tutorial somewhere.... maybe for Maya? .... <scratches head>

Jack,
I based my cannon image on this one and a memory of Shriner Circuses as a kid.
Kena,
"Loose Cannons" is only a working title, I don't want to give too much away. |

Circus Big Top: Using Reference Photo
1) Using the Cube Primitive and changing segments to 16x16x1
2) Soft Paint with the "Grab 1D" settings
3) I used Flat Plane UV Mapping
4) Photoshoped a nice Tent Material using "line" and "fill"
5) One shot of SS
6) See that Cannon Ball?
7) Red Herring :) |

I really like the vivid choice of palette colors here Steinie. Really does offer that circus atmosphere.

Thanks Frootee, colors are very important in my renderings. I'm updating the same rendering since nothing of significance is happening yet.
The Final Rendering when completed will have 5 layers of jokes to it.

Looking good Bob - 5 layers of jokes? Multi-dimensional humour! Wow!
Looking at your thread title and then out my window and over the neighbours fence this phrase springs to mind - 'Loose kids - hide the cannons!' :D |

Nice work - I like what you have so far. Perhaps make the tents larger? They seem to be out of proportion with the cannons. Another thing that might do well would be a few food stands, as this is something you almost always see at the circus. Overall though, it looks like your off to an excellent start!:)
PS. Don't forget to buy me a ticket!:D |

Hm... rivals? Looks like they are escalating their competitive efforts, since their cannons are aimed at each other's tents. :p

2Much4U: "Cannon size"
Frootee: "Escalating"
Both of these will make sense in "Layer 3";) Stay tuned!
W!zard ..."Layers" like an onion idea from Shrek
"Multi-dimensional humour!" I hope so... |

Now the fun begins!:)
All grabs so far are Real Time Rendering.
My plan is to render with VRay on the final rendering but that won't be soon.
Don't worry this Marty Feldman lookalike will get a body shortly. Shrunken head is in his future too.
I'm doing a little Maya and throwing the head around....it's probably one of those Immersive Environment Script Writer people with that "Look" and they don't speak our language either...they talk in tongues.....on Tuesday Nights....
I'll call them the "Coffee Tribe" (they use the word "Java" a lot!) |

Just a hint of where this is headed. (pun maybe intended). Cannonball Clown still needs Arm, Hand, BowTie showing through the smoke. A lot of activity is on the way.
This is a partial screen shot of a test render. Smoke was post process and done by hand. The other cannon needs a smoke ring.
Did you observant viewers catch the yellow line?
For those that have tried to figure out the gag, I also threw in a major clue (layer three) for you!;) |

Frootee, (thanks)
It will all make nonsense soon my little grasshopper...:D
Jack, that CGtalk Challenge looks like it was made just for me, and all the other Artist that were dropped on their heads when they were young!:D
I think I will plan on sending this one as you had suggested. It looks like two or three weeks of work left to finish.
This piece has been giving me problems because of the punch line. Believe it or not I research everything about a piece I'm working on. There is a reference in the punch line to a "circus term" which (I later discovered) also turns out to be a nickname for a bomb we used in the war. See how a simple cartoon turns into a dilemma?
Any gag writers out there who can suggest what to do? |

I'm not a gag writer but I'd say just go for it. If people start complaining because of some other possible reference then that's their problem. If we try to be overly sensitive so as to never, ever, even remotely possibly offend anyone or any sector of society then there would be no humour at all, anywhere, ever.
Having said that, if the 'misinterpretaion' is blatantly obvious and looks like you could be deliberately trying to offend then you have to weigh it up differently.
Make sense? I know what I mean, it's a system that has to be thought through when I'm putting new routines together, hope it makes sense here. |

WWitch, I see your point and tend to agree with you. Nothing I do or say is meant to harm or hurt anyone ever. But I also tend to push a joke too far and that is what I want to avoid here. The more I think about it the more I believe the joke is completely harmless. More harmless then showing a boy (with THAT look) and a cloud having a cigarette...:D |

Since you guys helped here is another update...
I think the look and feel is coming a long nicely. A story is being told and I haven't shown a word yet!
A lot more to come. Are we having fun yet? You bet.
Edit:9/1/07 Reworked Circus Banner/Added UniCycle
Edit:9/2/07 UniCycle Clown and his tiny hat added. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction...phewy
Edit:9/2/07 After looking at the CannonBall for a while and knowing how spheres are well liked in "Speed Modeling Challenges" it must be removed!;)
The entire body of the UniCycle Clown was done with one little cylinder. Didn't need the details so I just "pulled his arm" and "pulled his leg" (should be a tutorial "Pull your leg") I included the little arm here to show what I worked with.
Back to work, the next two items won't be this easy... |

I wasn't going to post this next step because it will give a lot away. However this is a WIP and if you all have been following along you deserve to see ALL the steps. These two models are half complete and awaiting their heads. Doing it this way makes it much easier to texture and pose. Good or Bad I'm glad your along for the ride!:)
Oh by the way...This is the beginning of layer three!
Five Comical Layers of the Rendering:
Layer 1) Names and Rivals
Layer 2) Human Cannonballs
Layer 3) Elephants and Escalation
Layer 4) "The Fat Man"
Layer 5) Two Circuses, One Town
extra credit if you said "and the elephants now have gray assehes"....:D
Next step: Two Heads |

Here is a little trick some of you might not be aware of. UV Map an object and apply a texture. Then with the texture visible use the softpaint tools to bring out the details. Very lifelike! Get out the nail clippers...:) |

Changed gears on this one so that I could get working on the "Dream House" Challenge.
I should have a finished piece ready for the weekend...:)
All five layers of the piece will be exposed and this nonsense will make some sense... |

One Head left!
I used the hair tool for the grass. It's a lot more fun creating grass then mowing it!:D
I'm tempted to put a little grass/hair on top of the elephants head, hmmm. |

One last post before I submit my finished Rendering. Just an illustration showing my thought process. This works for me and hopefully you'll learn from all the other TS artist here as well and develop your own unique style.
Now show me what you got....
and have FUN!
