Hello, I really need some advice from someone about purchasing a laptop to use with Truespace 7.5. I know laptops generally are not good for this but the dell inspiron 6400 e105 is different. It can come with 256 megs DEDICATED video memory for well under a thousand on ebay. My important question is ... I can get that laptop with either either of these video setups .....

256MB Nvidia GeForce® Go 7300 TurboCache Dedicated Video Card

or ...

256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory

The inspiron 6400 e105 laptop can come with either video setup.

So, WHICH laptop video should I get to work the BEST with Truespace 7.5?

I hope there is someone who might know. I would hate to get the wrong one. Thanks!

ATI has a history of inducing less frame bog for higher resolutions. I've never been satisfied with any nvidia in a laptop but have always liked the ATIs.

First check the screen on that laptop. I bought a E1505 last christmas and had to upgrade the display to the ultrasharp to get the proper resolution for its size. And in truespace, you NEED resolution.

Laptops really aren't ideally powered for this kind of an application. And what I mean by that is first off, it's a 3d-heavy app that requires tons of CPU and memory, both of which are pricey on laptops and you're not spending a lot here. This particular 3d app (which is new) needs a good GPU also for workspace, another thing usually nerfed on laptops. The lappies you mentioned are both nerfed to some degree.

Although it will run on them, I'd look at the Dell deals coming out lately. I bought my E1505 for $1100 back at christmas and the bastards have already put it up for $499 (instant rebate money), albeit plain jane and I upgraded mine about $300 worth. Even still you'd hit under 1k and it'd be brand new with an intact warranty without some yutz using the CDROM as a coffee cup holder.

Thanks so much for your help. I do have my powerful desktop but it is nice to take Truespace 7.5 on the road via a laptop. Since the dell inspiron 6400 e105 does come with 256 meg DEDICATED video memory and can be bought for $700 or so on ebay it may work out. I think I will go ahead and get the one that has the

256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory

setup.

Thanks again ......

I have a dell 1505 with the ati mobility. Only 128 mb of the video memory is dedicated, the rest is shared. That's what I'm told anyway. But I get very good performance with it with ts 7.51. I have 2 ghz dual cpu and the best screen they had. I only have 1 gb memory, i regret not getting 2 but I can upgrade. But I recommend the machine.

I've been using a Dell Inspiration 9400 for about a year without dramas: Centrino Duo, 2Gb ram;

256Mb NVIDIA GeForce G 7800 (Bios 5.70.02.30.12. Driver v7.8.5.9.)

Also works in multi-monitor mode 2nd monitor a DELL 2405FPW.

It works fine with ts7.51. & now ts7.51 :) .
