Well, it's a wet day and my builder has been 'rained' off my garden landscaping project, at times like this I get bored and my wallet starts to call to me.

My local PC store is selling AMD X2 6000 CPU's retail boxed for £117. At the moment I have an AMD X2 3800.

Question is; would an upgrade to this chip see any significant increase in performance in tS7.5 and Photoshop (my main apps)? I also use Hexagon and Bryce 6.6 a bit but not much else really. Run the odd game and surf the net but I have a decent Geforce 7900GT to take care of graphics. I also have 2Gb of DDR2 in her as well.

So, worth the upgrade for running these particular apps or best spent down the pub...:D

Ok, I seem to have answered my own question with this rather useful chart;

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=927&model2=921&chart=435

Looks like a rendering could be cut down by anything up to a half while FPS rates in games are generally increased by 50%. Photoshop processes seem to be cut by a third...:D

Still, wouldn't mind hearing anyone else's experience of this processor (X2 6000)...only real question is; do I wait until I get back from holiday and see if they have dropped in price even further?

A little further research shows that this chip outperforms the FX-62 and, where the quad cores are not fully utilized, performs on par with the new FX-74.....

I have a X4600 heh so I guess this doesnt help lol, but mine is pretty good and my rendering speeds are proper fast (ateast compared with my last AMD ATHLON 3000+ lol). Generally out of all things RAM and CPU are the most important for rendering, so I would definatly say yes to a CPU upgrade if they are looking for faster rendering time.

Would also note that this CPU is only £109.85 from CCL Online (http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=341) but then I guess you gotta pay shipping, and although it will still probably be less, would only be by a few quids heh

Iin the spirit of 'oh, what the hell' I bought it anyway. Seems noticably faster in a Vray render...:D

I had pretty good render speeds with the 3800 but I must admit to being a 'tech whore' and couldn't resist the fastest processor that my system could take...:D

As for price, saving a few quid was not worth the fun of buying this and installing within 30 mins of making the decision to purchase...:D :D

wow, that was quick! I'm holding out to see what AMD/Intel do next, i've heard both have got new chip out this year/ early next year so i'm gonna try and fight off all urges to upgrade and buy vista till then! Mind you something new is always round the corner with computers.......

Indeed, but I bought an off the shelf Vista AM2 machine in January and only the case is left now...:D Really should have built one with hindsight but I am happy with the performance of this thing now.

You must be minted Splinters.

I'm running an X2 4600+, and it's pretty fast. Not looking to upgrade till I hear about the new processors. First priority for me is a 30 inch monitor that runs 2500x1600 pixels. Cost about £1K in the UK just now, but the prices are falling.

Just about to stick it, and the matching AM2 mobo you nearly had before, on ebay. Should get £40-£50 for the pair plus delivery. At least it would offset the cost of this one. Email me if you want it Stoker. Ready made PC and I will even throw in the CD Drive...:D You just need Ram and a HD.

No, not at all. I am a teacher if that helps you to visualise my relative 'poverty'. Just work on my PC a lot and like to have decent technology.

Well, that beats eBay; new processor in, old one sold on all within a matter of hours.

Who needs fleabay anyway...:D

Oh, and just about everything is noticably quicker with this CPU if anyone was curious...:)
