Yes, I know I am lazy and should work it out myself but as the song goes; I ain't too proud to beg.
Anyway, a client/friend wants me to knock up a render of a board game proposal and, although it is an early attempt, I thought it worth getting the board right from the start then just update the graphics.
So what is the best way of getting that folded board look on the board it self and the vinyl/paper that covers it so I can easily reapply up dated board graphics. I can do something 'like' but I really want photorealism and not just a Bump map.
Any suggestions? I will probably need to fold the whole thing up too for an animation later. |

Hi Splinters.
I'm no expert, as I'm sure you know by now, but my approach would be to actually use three separate nearly-flattened cubes stretched out in rectangular fashion, and then attempt to position them as accurately to the positions of the cardboards in your photos above as possible. Using actual light to reproduce the fold effect rather than a textural approach to that effect.
The film coating I would ask for help on myself! Hahaha!
Interesting project for sure.

i don't think ot's much further along than you are but heres how i'd do it:

it was done by making a square, sweeping one side and shrinking it down, sweeping it out and enlarging it to make the seam, then sweeping it along to make the next baord face, but then you can probably tell that just by looking at it. Adding more faces to the seams would help to make it more realistic if you wanted to so tht far.
I suppose you could add bones to animate the folding |

Cheers for the advice guys. Got it as detailed as I need for these early shots. Now just to change the board graphics as they progress and composition/lighting etc.
Again, many thanks.
Yeah, I know the die is wrong too..... |

That looks excellent to me Splinters, you got that blue paper board texture perfect and the board crease looks great too.
Nailed it!:)

Still playing with this and early stages but this is more proof of concept than before. |

It's looking really good Splinters. :)
There's some odd blurring and aliasing towards the upper left you might want to look into though before delivering the final. |

Thanks, that would be the DOF and lo-res rendering. Still very early days with this but I needed to get something to him while he seeks a publisher; more a proof of concept for now...:) |

Soon I will have to keep this private, if it gets to a publisher, so I thought I would share the last render I did... |

Might want to try two planes for the table top. One for the shiny varnish and another for the wood texture.
It's looking good Splinters! :)
