Having solved the bizarre behaviour I was experiencing it was down to some actual modelling again. Think this is ready for the texturing stage now. Hopefully more will become clear as the paint gets slapped on!

lol If they start arguing, then I will just have to roll on the floor a while. Very well done! So far it looks like a good start for the movie Robots!. Really, they look like two arguing objects with eyes and mouths. Beautiful work as usual. |

Very nice, like the detailing. I too could see it fitting in Robots or Futurama but will be interested to see which way you take it.
Out of curiosity, what's your lighting set up like here - seeems to be several shadow sources? |

I've never seen Futurama so any resemblance is purely coincindental. Either that or they've got a time machine, popped into the future and nicked my idea! :-)
Anyway... Quite right Nez, there were two shadow casting lights. Not exactly a set up, just threw them in so you could see things and set them to cast shadows to give a bit of depth, they were only temporary.
Here's a mini update with the lighting more like it will be when finished...

scrap that last one, this is more how it'll be in the final. This is how it stands at end of play today. I'll do some more after some sleep (and providing it won't keep crashing when painting shaders - grrr), should give more of an idea of its direction.

I guess I never paid attention to the first image :)
I thought they were goin to be his'n'her heads .... on ships they call the can a head ..... so I figured eventually I would see the international signs for sexes show up on respective twilights :D
they've got a time machine, popped into the future and nicked my idea! :-)
Geesh what a mind :) |

I didn't know that, I see how that misinterpretation could have happened! Maybe I'll have to add a yankable chain somewhere just for an in-joke! :-)
Yes Jack, one of the lights is a projector. |

I opened this topic thinking it would be a model of headphones, as they are sometimes referred to as "cans".
:)
The scene looks really nice, though! Excellent style and quality, as usual. |

Coming along nicely and the caustic effect of the water on the wall is effective. |

Kate: I can dig it. At first I was reminded of the now famous words of Cheech and Chong 'I gotta go to the can, man' :)
But now I see a totaly different story being told. I can't wait for the next installment. |

Thanks for the comments guys 'n' gals. You're not imagining things Mr Mouse, it is a little on the dark side. Reason being there's a couple of lights I've left out for the moment to speed up the test render times.
Here's how it stands after today's fiddling:

I think I've got this one out of my system! Unless anyone can spot anything glaringly wrong. Not sure whether I prefer 'au naturel' or the slightly colour adjusted version. Crits and comments more than welcome...

Still too clean and orderly!
Needs more 'rusticles', debris, depth cue, dirty water, suspended particles,
dark corners, light falloff, off kilter floors, glass, wires, pipes, machinery of undetermined purpose, more More MORE! (http://www.goingunder.net/KISS%20Isle%20Royal%20CCR/imagepages/image9.htm)
Your public demands it! |

The only thing that I'm not so keen on is the texture for the floor. The tread plate scale looks a little large for the scene IMHO.

The texturing is great and it is a fantastic idea, but I think the picture lacks a point of focus, When it is meant as a still you would like your eye to be drawn to a central point, the head in the can I would say. Now my eyes just swarm around. You can do that by using the textures and forms on the wall and change them to make lines to the drums, also the tubes on the floor could be bended differntly to guide your eyes to the drums. In addition (and probably the easiest to do) is to put a spot light on the drum and make them stand out more from the background as a clair obsur.
Just some thoughts.

I like the top pic over the bottom pic...unless....the bottom pic gives me more the impression of being underwater. If that is the case, where are the barnicales, fish, octopii, starfish etc? Of course, who says the underwater creatures have to be earthly? What if a partial but recognizable shadow of a shark or whale were in there? Or the shadow of a big hand? What about air bubbles rising up from the cans? Rocks? A HUGE hand holding a net scooping up a fish? Eels or snakes?
I agree with Mick and Georg that as is this image does spur the imagination, but I still go away without a clue to enough of the story. It's like only giving me a couple of sentances from paragraph 10 of chapter 3, I want to know more.
I have really been enjoying your work and look forward to more KatePics! WOOHOO! |

This looks great witchy! I really like the textures and geometry. I think some areas could use a little specularity somewhere, no sure where though. But I think this would liven it up a bit. The lighting looks a little flat as is I think. |

Thanks again for the feedback. So the moral of the story is 'just because I'm bored with it doesn't mean it's finished'! :-) Always been my trouble, get it close enough and the 'that'll do' mentality kicks in.
Looking at it with fresh eyes after a short break I can see what else needs to be done so I guess I'll just have to get on with the fiddly bits.
Thanks for the kick in the rear I needed! :) |
