I know what is missing; a big hammer :)
Every once in awhile one of the maintenance workers stops by and just hammers on the side of the can .... once a week or so :) |

Sounds like you speak from experience Norm :-)
Here's the latest update. Kinda hit a wall now and don't know where to go with it. All suggestions gratefully received (well, probably not all but you know what I mean. heh!)

This really came along nicely! I haven't seen heads do this since the 60's:rolleyes:
This is what caught my eye, caustics disappeared?, the box's texture in the center looks like a bad Scotsman, the left tank and it's pipes need leaking dripping texture, maybe some Mr. Bubble action in the "headcans" (whatever THAT means), and the ground (not the sand) needs darkening.
Nice work all around. |

Very nice work WWOTW, I agree with Steinie though; some leaking in there and some moody lighting might help. Great work though and nice textures...:D |

I really like it. How about adding a crack to one of the glass fronts with a spray of liquid spurting out? |

Now we're talkin! You have added a lot since the last render. Quite impressive. I agree that I miss the caustic lighting effect and some textures need just a bit of tweeking, but what you have is quite thought inspiring.
As far as suggestions go...hmmmm. Since the overall condition of the mechanicals looks basically abandoned for quite a while, I would think more than just surface rust and decay would be present. For instance some of the metal would have rust holes or corners erroded away. Maybe like normally less stable things like a hose support or something might have rusted to the point of collapse and the hoses falling over. I hope you catch my drift.
Either way, I am very impressed with your work and encourage you to KEEP IT UP!

p.s. Why do I keep hearing small echoing voices say 'Marcia! ...blub blub' 'OH! John!.. blub blub' ? :) |

Great textures on top of great modeling on top of a great imagination! Maybe play with darkening the floor?
.....sort of reminds me of a job I used to have....... |

Wow, looking fanstastic, love the extra detail.
The thing that particulalrly strikes me is that it seems a bit bright - almost overlit - for the moody derelict type situation. This may also be why the caustic effect is no longer obvious (or you may have removed it:rolleyes:). I don't think losing the caustic effect is so important - it needn't be that the scene is underwater anyway, but I think you could move towards some moodier lighting, which might allow the 'cans to cast some blue light out into the scene more noticeably?
On a much more minor point, it seems to me that all those lovely gauges have their needles pointing in pretty much the same direction - I hope that's a good sign and doesn't mean everything is about to explode or something! But maybe you could add a shade of variation to the needle positions, or add some lit warning lights to show something is going wrong, or something along those lines....
This has come along really well, a great spooky piece... |

Excellent! "No one can tell you what the Matrix is Neo...." - looks like these guys took the Blue Pill!
Well Kate this did not pan out like I imagined at all - your first post with those cans and their wide mouths and dial eyes looked very child-like - someone mentioned the 'Robots' movie. I thought I was seeing the set up for one of your wickedly funny pictures - I was imagining Bird building a nest in the centre can for example. But you took it in a totally different direction.
Great work, I love it. I'd be tempted to put somewhat brighter lighting inside the cans so the interior lights cast illumination onto the grungy surrondings. Just a thought. |

Well I did my share of plant-turnarounds in my day. I used to put the breathing-gear on and climb into vessels that required cleaning. Some were quite large. It was nothing to have every maintenance guy in the plant walk by with a hammer and just slam the side of the vessel. We wore ear-plugs so we were not really bothered by it. Just happened so often we would roll our eyes as we worked. We got to come out of the vessel once an hour to breath regular atmosphere and hydrate our lungs for half-hour or so ... then back into the gear and into the vessel again.
Image is coming along nicely. The atmosphere is close reminder to me of gas-plant setting. Textures hit it off nicely :) |

My goodness Norm, you've got gumption!
I'm not crawling inside of anything like that to clean it, or for any reason whatsoever!! no way!

@WWOTW ...now your "Head Cans" seems even scarier! :D;

Thanks for the feedback guys 'n' gals and apologies to those who thought this was going to be a cartoon! I've fiddled with a few bits and bobs based on some of the feedback here and I think I've hit the final version. I pushed the dodge too hard in post on the previous image which accounted for the burnt out floor so that was easy to fix (just didn't do it again!). Nez was right about the guage needles (well spotted!) and I changed some of the textures but tS seems to be calling in cached versions from somewhere as they didn't change and to repaint them all would have been a nightmare so for now they all stay 'calm'.
The caustics weren't taken out, the lighting hasn't changed at all, they just seem to have gotten lost with all the garnish that's been added. Not too bothered about that as it was a bit oxymoronic. "texture in the center looks like a bad Scotsman" sorry Steinie, I couldn't do anything about that as I have no idea what it means!
Anyway... here it be:

Much improved over last. I think the lighting could be a bit more dramatic if maybe spotlights or projector lights were used to indicate light coming in from a hatch window, and if there were lights in the head cans.
Edit: whupps there *ARE* lights in the head cans, what I mean is an overall darker scene with the light spilling out from the head cans.
I also think the head could be improved by having cybernetic type cables coming out of the busts - particularly on the underside near the shoulders which still looks a bit unfinished.
It's good work overall though! |

Thank you for going the extra mile with this image. I know you were bored with it and were ready to just let it go. I hope you will agree that the extra effort has really made a difference and adds so much more interest and drama. I think there will always be places and parts of any such work that can be improved on, but it's an overall process of learning and applying techniques and developing skills, and 1 single image cannot contain all of that at any given time. I look forward to any additional changes you may make to this one, and to future projects of yours.
Brava! Well done :)

Tips hat to Witchy - an accomplishment that's "head and shoulders" above the competition. I look forward to seeing it in next month's contest as the winner. |

Lovely work Kate - I really like the colour palette you've used too. The blue light and the yellowy rust combine to create an almost natural colour selection, like one would see in a nature scene - this contrasts nicely with the cyber/mechanical/grunge feel.
Marvellous effort! |

Few minor tweaks and twiddles and here's the final one. Thanks to everyone that gave feedback, all very valueable, especially those that pushed me on past the initial concept, definitely made a difference and I enjoyed doing it. I'm happy with how it is now and it's on to the next thing.

The camera pulls back and pans to look out a grime-speckled window. Outside we see a white birdlike figure hopping nimbly into an impeccable Lambourgini which drives off into the distance. Professor Birds leaves the secret laboratory.......
OK so I read too many comics! Love this picture Kate - looking forward to the next one! Have some bananas from me too

I love the grimy, industrial look of this, the control station is great.
Have some bouncing heads for a bit of, oddly appropiate, variation:
