Thanks for the feedback guys.......

Do you plan to distress the edges of leather a little, a make it a bit greasy/bloodstained? Hmmmmmmm. I wasn't planning on, do you think it needs it then?

Did you rig this guy with the new bones? What render engine did you use? I did originally start to rig him with TS's new bones but ran into some trouble (which was more to do with my lack of experince with TS bone than the bones themselves) so I eventually rigged him in poser which I'm more familiar with. He's rendered using lightworks.

I'll have to print this guy to hang on my wall for inspiration if that's OK with you. Sure... but you might want to wait for the finished render, then if you ask me nicely I'll might email you the larger version;).

Can I have your autograph? As soon as I learn to write :D

As usual Steve, you always fail to disappoint!!! LOL :D

Thanks again guys.

Nah, just a personal preference - he's probably just a natty dresser - or it's fairly new issue. :p

Oh, and sorry I called him an ogre.. my recollection of the trolls is from the Hobbit "what's a bur-a-hobbit? - and can you eat it?" ... "let's sit on him and squash him to a jelly" :D

ooh yes, please! :) *Butter jumps on the bandwagon

Did you ever think of setting up a cafepress store? Its free for a basic one and like 7 bucks a month for a premium one where you can have as much products as you like. I would buy a nice print or poster of this. I have sold stuff and if I can sell stuff you can sell much more than me.

Did you ever think of setting up a cafepress store? Nope, I've got a turbosquid store and I've sold a little from there. I'll have to have a look at cafepress it might just tie up nicely with an idea I've had kicking around for a while. Thanks Dennis.

deviantArt has excellent printers and some nice products. I recently had some 20x20in prints made for my sister, and they came out beautifully. The entire process, from order to arrival went very smoothly (packed excellently, an order trackable by purchaser), and as I said .. a number of products available.. (might be worth investigating) ;) ... and no, I don't get a kickback :D

Ah, you truly have an insight in the "fashion for the nifty troll" area. ;)

Now, would it be possible to get a fullscale 3D-print to place as a door-guard at home? :D

Well its been quite a while but I'm finally back with an update. Life's been busy here for a while but now I've finally made some progress.:-

I've tweaked a few of the textures, played with the lighting and of course added the shoulder armour.

Now here's the question:- I was originally planning a helmet for 'Fat Boy' but I'm starting to think the scene doesn't need it and this would be overkill.
If I don't go with a helmet I'll have to do some work on the head texture at the sides (especially around the ears).

So what do you think:- helmet or not???

Crits and comments as always please guys.

Steve

P.S. Shown without weapons here of course.

Looks awesome as is. I don't think a helmet is necessary. Great work man!

Love this stuff Steve, you know I picked you and Parva as my mentors and this is the reason why.

I would make the helmet, if he is going to battle this well dressed, he would want to protect his head. One point though, those leather straps across his chest need a bit of tension (and slack) in places for more reality.

I know what you mean about being busy...I really am struggling to do any personal work lately. Still, we keep at it eh? ;)

Beautiful work Madmouse.

THe only thing that comes to mind, if he's a battler, how abt a scar or two? As for a helmet, the texture is so great that it would be a sin to cover it, but with the spikes and all, it does ask for some type of (small) head gear. I would just say keep it small so the texture ain't lost

He just needs the maze... personally I wouldn't add a helmet or add but laying at the ground.

I like the viewer's point of view in this shot. The arm protection looks great with maybe a few sword cuts in the leather(above the wrist). No helmet.

Very awesome for sure! I would suggest maybe tone down the red color of the gums and add a tongue.

Wow! I love this beestie :p that's great gear... I don't know about the helmet ... atm I'd say no.. but if I saw it .. I might change my mind.. the textures are wonderful. I agree with toning down the red a bit in the mouth .. but ... well.. wow.. ^_^

Loving the new shoulder piece!

I agree about the mouth tones needing to be toned down some.

Also I think Dragneye's suggestion of a small (asian?) style head piece may be the way to go. I'm curious to see what kind of helmet you'd make for the guy before saying which way would be better. ;)

Or you could go with a good old fashioned propeller beanie.

I'll resist the urge to suggest a tall pointed hat festooned with glowing moons and stars and mystical symbols and instead I'll say he looks great as he is. Should you decide to go with the head gear I'd recommend something shall that protects the top and back of his head while leaving his face fairly open.

Splinters and I seem to think alike - I voted for you as mentor too!

Looking great! I'm not convinced he needs a helmet - he's got a pretty hard head anyway! And it would be a shame to cover up more than necessary. But if he's going to have some headgear, I'd agree with the open-face type - something along the lines of a Roman soldier's helmet, with cheek/jowl plates? Seem to remember that some of the LOTR beasties did have some form of helmet...

And I agree on the harness straps - they looked to me like they needed a bit of adjustment to either conform more to the torso and/or emphasise some strain - not sure exactly what...

Awesome as always...

Thanks for all the kind comments and crits/suggestions guys.

I've decided not to got with a helmet so here's another update.......

1)... I've added the sword cuts that Steinie suggested.

2)... Toned down the red of the gums.

(BTW trueBlue, he has got a tongue, its not not easy to see at this angle)

3)... Altered the texture on the collar to match the shoulder armour.

4)... Added Jack's suggestion of the scared and white'd eye.

(Thanks Jack I really like this)

5)... Sorted out the odd shadows around his ear.

6)... Added cuts, bruises, scratches and scuffs.

I'm rather pleased with the wounds on his knee and chest. I thought they were rather effective considering it was all done with textures and bumps.

If there are no more crits or suggestions then I'll call 'Fat Boy' finished and move on to some sort of background.

(Not as detailed as originally planned, as another project is looming so time is tight.)

You know he really didn't look frightening until NOW. His blinded eye and scars indicate previous battles. This is very very good work Steve.

Now where did he leave his shield and hammer...?

I've just been reading about werewolves - looking at the amazing textures on your fatboy I can't help thinking he looks somewhat like a wererhinoceros! Just needs a big horn on his nose!

Seriously though Steve this is looking superb mate - I hope you get sufficient time to give him an appropriate scene to do him justice. He's looking so real I keep (nervously) wondering what you feed him on? Tax collectors? Encyclopaedia salesmen? Local body politicians? Obviously not fellow trueSpacers....

Mmmm...werewolf, Dribble...fur....do you have dribble Steve?

Would be great fun doing some brick/stone displacement in your background...maybe a bit of fur when it is out.

I can always render for you if you don't have dribble then you can composite yourself. Anything to help a mate...:D

Good point Splinters. Wizard's work would look AWESOME in dribble and it's more affordable than VRay. Just imagine those town scenes with GI and HDRI.... ;)
