I just installed the video manuals is there a reference PDF that tells you which video to watch first? I went to Chapter 1 and there was a link to one of the videos "pe.wmv" not sure which video will build off of that one.

Hey Clark, to the best of my knowledge .. you should be able to read the PDF manual (in your browser) and at appropriate places in the manual, there are links to the videos, which you can click and the videos play right in the browser too. So they match up with whatever you're trying to learn.

My manual is installed this way:

(my trueSpace75 is installed in C drive, but whatever drive you've used it should look like the following)

path: trueSpace75 / tS / PDF Man

the PDF Man folder contains all the pdf and wmv files

the PDF Man folder also contains a file called: ts75_manual.html
(this is what makes it viewable in your browser)

(there is also a folder within the PDF Man folder called Images - just leave that one alone)

When you click on 'help' from inside trueSpace 7.51 when it's running, it should automatically open your default browser for you and your entire manual is available for viewing in your browser, including the videos, from links in the pdf pages.

You could also make a shortcut to that ts75_manual.html file I mentioned, if you want to be able to view the manual when you don't have your trueSpace open. This is not standard procedure, but I like to keep shortcuts to all my manuals in a folder of their own, in addition to the links within the relevant software (it's a librarian sorta thing, I guess).

Because my browser was playing up and not showing the videos, even though everything was installed correctly (a browser problem, not a trueSpace problem) I had also made a list of links to all the videos.

This is not ideal, as it is a lot of work to match the videos to all the proper pages in the manual as there are many videos! So eventually, I managed to come up with a workaround that lets me see the videos from the links in the pages ... I posted that here: Workaround for Browser Links (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=46979&postcount=1) (hopefully, you won't actually need this, though)

Well, I really hope that will help you, but I am very new to trueSpace myself, so it's likely one of the experience folks will reply to you soon, and help you get it sorted (in case my help doesn't do the trick)

One nice thing about this software and this community - people will help you!

^_^

Hi,

I combined all the pdfs in the Manual into one Big One (65.6 mb)

using PDF Combine (http://www.coolutils.com/PDFCombine)....now I can search all 1,290 pages in one swell foop. :D

BTW, you can download the fully functional, no limitations, 30-day trial of PDF Combine (here (http://www.coolutils.com/PDFCombine)) ....works great. They also offer a huge bundle of useful utilities.

Next, I just have to re-arrange the table of contents so it's all together.

All the video links still work, too.

I still want to get the printed version as well. ;)

Sounds like Caligari should invest in a tool like pdf combine.

HINT,HINT!!! :-)

In case anyone is interested

PDF Creator (http://www.pdfforge.org/)

is free, fully functional and open source, and can be found here, too:

PDF Creator at SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator)

@megacal - it has been mentioned in another thread, that the manual for 7.51 will not be offered in print. While I find that disappointing, I understand the rationale - with all the videos, print alone is simply no longer adequate. I'll be breaking out my space-hogging crt from mothballs and become a dual-screener fairly soon, I think... :p

p.s. I'm all for the swell foop approach - good idea! (and cute wordplay) :D

Here is another alternative. I used an old version of Adobe Acrobat to create an index file. Copy the contents of the zip file into the PDFMan folder. The original html is replaced with a version with a link to the index. When you search through the index it looks in all the pdf files.

Thanks for that. I've been using the pdf function in Open Office, but it is rather limited. That proggie should be useful!

Cheers

It's no-frills, but quite serviceable.

One thing I noticed though, when converting an excel workbook to pdf it did not pick up multiple worksheets within it.. it only grabbed the first one.
So, I had to save them as separate .xls files.

Then it made perfectly good pdfs from xls, doc and rtf files. After that I bundled all 20 pdfs into one, and it worked perfectly.

(that was a task in the library where I work, not the manual) ;)

Does this mean I can;t jsut download the updated manual? I have to somehow integrate the videos into it?

When I got the notice about the upgrade to chapters one and three, those chapters just installed themselves into the main manual document.

So now is it separate?

I think it automatically installed into the appropriate folder of tS.... and the videos were a part of it? ... now I don't remember, since I had my unusual problem.. and I copied all the videos into another folder so that I could view them (until I figured out my workaround).

I hope someone else can give you a better answer..... anyone??

Sorry .. I missed part of your post.. I have not downloaded the updates, so I don't know what I'm talking about .. sorry :(

When I first installed the Manual it created a folder "PDFMan" within the trueSpace directory.
In that folder I have all the PDF files and Videos.
When I installed the Update it updated Chapters 1 and 3 in the above folder.
I believe if you were to move the HTML, which is the Table of Contents, file out of the above folder then the Manual button inside tS7.5.1 would no longer function. Same as the File/Help - Manual in the tS7.5.1 File Menu.

Yes, that's the setup I have too, except I also made a shortcut to the html file so that I could also access the manual without firing up tS.

It could probably also be set up as a consolidated PDF with the videos included in the folder, but I'd have to experiment with that before say so for sure.. however, having a consolidated PDF makes searching the entire database easier (instead of having to search it section by section from the html contents).
