The guy at this Website appears to have some very nice textures for Castles.
http://mayang.com/textures/Architectural/html/Walls/index.html
I applied them on simple cylinders. |

Very good start rjeff - I'm something of a castle fan myself - when I lived in Britain we would spend our weekends castle hunting and I've often thought about attempting to model Corfe Castle (which is actually in ruins) in southern England.
Your castle looks more like what I would imagine a crusader castle from the middle east would look like, or beven a small fortified town.
Looking forward to seeing where this will go - good work so far.
(And an excellent subject to learn some texturing skills on - you've got the modelling part working well but that's only a third of the fun - texturing and lighting are the other thirds and I can never decide which part I like best!) |

Well I agree Wizard. My plans for texturing is to practice on a cube or sphere till I get the hang of it. I am going to try to learn to use the layers aspect of Photoshop so I can the the good detail I want. As far as lighting. I will need help with that. I am still very unsure of my self with that. I really don't even know where to start. |

I'm not sure which tS version or render engine you are using but I found that I learned a lot about lighting by simply building a flat gound plane and putting some textured cubes and cylinders on it then I tried each of the light setups that come in the tS 5/6/7(model side) light library.
Start with one light preset and explore what happens when you render after changing a few parameters - this will give you a better understanding of shadows, lights, fall off rates and so forth - and of course theres plenty of folk here on the forum happy to offer specific advice.

Looking awesome~
you this is where splatting would come in handy. It would allow you to blend
textures into your landscape.

multiple masked textures....I don't know if Vickie is using them...I am using an RGB blend method(standard stuff) you could check them out on my site...since I'm unable to explain exactly how it works...(in under 300 words). |

Splatting lets you paint with textures. Like this; say you make your landscape
with one texture like TS and GS do.
http://www.eaglesoftworxstudio.com/WORK/Splatting/splat1.jpg
If you had a splatting tool you would now be able to pick another texture
and blend it into the main texture just like using an airbrush, like this;
http://www.eaglesoftworxstudio.com/WORK/Splatting/splat2.jpg
and then a 3rd texture, like this;
http://www.eaglesoftworxstudio.com/WORK/Splatting/splat3.jpg
by using alpha blending the texture all bleed into one another seamlessly making
a landscape that looks real and not choppy.
hope that indulged you ;)
always~
Vickie ;)
PS: it would be nice to have a splatting tool built into TS don't you think? |

I am a bit shaky with ligthing as well Butterpaw. The light I used is the TS mid day setup. I think it works well with my scene and sky. That sky is lit form the same direction the scene is lit from. The texture is from Simbiot shader which is really nice for free. James I may do this as an abandoned castle..ala Petra. |

Really? hmm I thought that the new rocks look like a desert scene which I am going for. You know how the wind and sand can make thoes desert rocks look. Oh and I am still adding rocks to it. |

Ok here is a revised wip with new rocks. I hope they look more natural. I have finally figured out how to make my rocks rounded and sheer at the same time. |

Cool, what technique did you use in the end?
have you put the rocks shader to smooth not faceted? might help to get rid of someof the harsh straight lines on them, unless that what you're after. |

Well I figured out a fun little techinque with SDS. I made the rocks in point edit to get the shape I desired. Now if you apply sds now it will mess up the rock and funky-fy it. So what I did was to select the top of the rock sweep it then scale the top in just abit, or more depending on the amount of roundness I wanted, and did the same to the bottom and voila you get a nice rounded top with sheer sides. Hmm I may try the facted thing and see how it looks. |
