Rjeff,
I recomends you add displacent mapping with a noicy texture on your rocks to add more realism..
Just try! ;) |

ok here is an updated image. I added the exterior walls and I also changed up the texture on the cliffs themselvs. I wanted them a bit smoother than what they were. |

Are the rocks finished yet? Reason I ask is cos they look far too smooth and regular, as well as far too shiny (like they're carved pumpkins, which is quite topical!). You've got some variation going on in the arch but the tops and sides of all the others are perfectly straight and smooth.
If you're using tS7, attack them with the displacement brush, it's great for that sort of thing. If you're using 6 or earlier, get yourself a free copy of CP2 and let the Wiggledy plugin do it's job, it'll make a big difference. |

well the bump that is on the rocks now is the bump that comes with the shader. I turned it down a bit. I am still working on the spec on the rocks. I was going to tone it down a bit. Thanks for the advice guys! |

Do you have Dribble?, I can imagine a nice bit of rock displacement on those at no hit on your actual geometry or poly count...:D |

Actually that is why I am putting so much into this piece. I want to win dribble. Rigth now I don't have the funds to spare to get it. I did a bump in PShop using the clouds filter. I had a nice texture, howerver I was getting a seam in the rocks, and I am not very familar with the uv tools. So I was trying to get a nice compromise with what Simbiont had for now to try and get the image done and still look nice. My next study will be texturing. I have UV cow and I need to learn how to use it. |

This is coming along quite nicely now - I think the landscape has improved quite a bit (the one with the weird 'blobby' rocks was a bit quirly!) but would point out the following, which marries in a bit with points already raised:
It's quite unusual (but admittedly not unheard of) for the striation (or 'banding') in rocks to be vertical - it's usually much closer to horizontal or on shallow slopes, sometimes with undulations. Steel planes or vertical lines are sometimes seen - but see my next point also.
As WWotW has pointed out, flat terraces/plateaus are also relatively unusual, although - again - not unheard of. Similar formations - often called 'mesas' can be seen in America's Monument Valley. Even so, they're rarely as flat as this and you wouldn't often find a series of them at different levels as you've shown. More noticably - for mesa type formations to form, you would really expect horizontal 'banding' in the rock, so that the weathered (i.e. wind-eroded) shape has some relationship to the underlying geology.
I realise you're using procedural type textures and not exactly after photo-realism, but if you could adjust the orientation it might look a bit more convincing. If any of the above doesn't make sense, give us a shout and I'll try to clarify - I'm not a geologist by any means but have a passingl familiarity with the subject and the above stood out to me a little in your picture.
Finally, with regards the scale - do't know how this is all going to fit together in the end, but those pillars - when compared to the castle walls/towers - are huge diameter.... |

yeah I agree 100% Nez. I am going to work on thoes issues next. I have to hurry cause I sitll have the main structure to work out. The columns were meant to be Lord of the Rings'ish. Kinda like when they were fighting the Balrog in the caves in the first one. Thoes were very big columns that were carved by the elves. |

Well done rjeff, it's getting there. be careful of the texture on the castle walls, it's looks a little to big making the walls look smaller.
Are you putting buildings on the tops of the rocks the walls are enclosing? that would look really cool. |

Cool - I can relate to that for the columns (in the mines of Moria - and you mean dwarves! ;))
And yeah, time's running out a little, I know... but it's coming along nicely. Good luck! |

Yeah Jayr I have to scale down that rock bump on the castle. I did not want them that big, and yes I do have plans for some stuructures on the rocks! |

Oh..meant to ask. what would be the best way to make some dunes. I tried to devide a plane then use the deform tool but it is just to pointy. I want nice rounded mounds. |

in 6.6 i've used a program called 'truescape' it works like bryce's hightfeild editor.
but this is another way:
1: this is a plane object 'quad devided' 4 times and the point edited:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/plane001.jpg
2:The same plane Sub-devided twice:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/plane002.jpg
3: and textured:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/plane003.jpg
this took about 10 mins to do, spend a bit longer and you could end up with something really special.
In 7.5 you can just use the displacement mapping |

Ok Here is my final rock set up. It has to be I have to do my interior stuff. Looks like some long nights till Saturday. I had no idea how to do rocks when I started, thanks to Jayr and everybody else who helped I think I have a pretty good grasp on them now. Leeme know! |

Very intersting to look at.. the rocks developed nicely.. they look vaguely earth/desert-like, but a bit otherworldly too.. cool! :)
Looking forward to seeing the rest! |

Ok here is the start of the entrance to the rock castle. I may rework the thing above the dome, but the rest I like. The block is used to represent the mountain. |

That entrance looks quite familiar. I think it was the south entrance to Atlantis when I was a citizen there. :D |

I like it, nice detailing. But I would say that if it supposed to be in stone, it's pretty unlikely you'd be able to achieve such deep carving (in the triangular section - pediment?) as the 'uncarved' portions would probably be too fragile... I'd make the recess shallower but you can probably get away with a bit of artisitc licence anyway... |

Yeah I was thinking the same thing Nez. I felt it to deep when I made it. I am going to get some images of greek architecure and some Arab as well and try to belnd them. Well Maybe, Depends on my time. I will be having a long night..them stupid rocks took way to much time. |

Yep, know the feeling! I always spend too long on the modelling and don't tend to have time to do the lighting as well as I should! As I don't have internet access ast home, my time is basically up - I have to post today whilst I'm in the office and can get on the computer. On the plus side, means I can't stay up all night working on it! I don't envy you that.
Good luck with your scene, hope it turns out how you want it! |

I don't mind to stay up late. It is not unsual for me to stay up to 1 am or later, especially when engrossed in Halo3. I am a bit of a nite owl. |

I like it. I would have made the castle be the main focus though as it has more detail.
Was interesting to see you work through it. I'd give you my dribble if it wasn't machine specific, as I haven't used it yet.
And I haven't finished my dream house project either. heh |
