Ok I need to know if there is a feature like Bryce has for grouping and "gluing" objects I know you can glue as siblings and such..but in Bryce you can draw a bounding box around objects and group them all at once. Then you can just his the ungroup buttons and viola it is done..no need to worry about hirearhcy. Is there a function in TS like that?

hi jeff! :D

Open the LE.

arrange the items you want; put them together

LMB-drag around this group

Click the 'Encapsulate in 3D' icon

In the LE, an empty title bar appears in the box encasing your objects. Enter a title name, then press enter.

Your objects should now be glued-as-sibling (Encapsulated)

Also, to unglue the encapsulated items, you need to go over to the model side, click on the group, hit the down arrow on your keyboard, then repeatedly click on the unglue icon, until all objects in the group are freed.

An "un-encapsulate" button will probably come to the workspace side soon.

I think it is a good idea to keep the Link Editor in view at the bottom of the screen, to name objects, and to keep them organized visually in the Link Editor. It becomes increasingly important in complex scenes, and makes selecting objects easy. I use it more than the 3Dwindow for selecting.

You can also "open" the encapsulated object in the Link Editor and select its individual parts.

I can't think of a reason to have more than 3 or 4 objects encapsulated.

Also, there is a way to free a single item from an encapsulated group on the workspace side. It sounds complex, but only takes a few seconds and I often use it:

1) "Open" the group in LE (click orange square on group object)

2) select the item to be freed

3) temporarily insert it into an object library

4) delete it from the 3d scene

5) close the group in the LE (click orange triangle at upper right of LE window)

6) double click on the item in the library

It will then return to the scene just as it was, but will be outside of and no longer a member of the encapsulated group.

I've noticed the more objects you have parented the slower it becomes. If it is stair why not just collapse it into one object, I know this is off topic...but....I will leave it at that. Just trying to help.

well jeff it's actually a lot faster to do it, than it is to explain it. :)

That is one way to do it, off the top of my head.

Come to think of it, you may also be able to Ctrl-click the items in the 3D space, then click the encapsulate button. Not sure; I've always used the LE to do it.

Justin:

As far as encapsulating lots of objects into one single unit, think of an engine with lots of moving parts. If you want to move them as a single unit, encapsulating them all into a single object is one way to do it.

Ya know...I used to be able to select all the objects by doing a bounding box then clicking on the gule as sibling button and it would do it...now you can't.

Sure you can... in 6.6.
Hold Control, drag marquee, click glue/ boolean add.
Simple.

Maybe you can do it on Model side.

Look ma, no spaghetti.

Actually, it's very easy to do both.

here ya go - with pictures and everything!!!

Drag your mouse around the objects you want to "glue"

13114

Hit the icon to encapsulate.

13115

Give your multi-object a name

13116

Three simple steps - quick and easy - I do it all the time.

I also "unglue" all the time....

Just switch to the Model space and hit the icon to "unglue" which says to "split ...."

13117

And you are done.

If you count the switching to the Model side, the total number of steps is 5

The old way, you have to select an object - hit the glue icon - then select each and every other object one at a time to "glue" them. Unglue, I think is another one-click though... I haven't tried it in a while.

No, you may be thinking of object union. To glue multiple objects together in 6.6 you just group select the objects and hit the glue button.

Maybe Caligari could find a way to do this better than both these methods?

Ok..I accidently figured out a trick...if you go into WS then go back to MS the controll panel from the bottom of the WS that has the encapsulate in 3d will be visiable...so if you hold crtl and then put a bounding box around all the object you want to select you can encapsulate them on the MS..and it works.

Trust me... as you get more familiar with the workspace you'll find yourself using the Link Editor more... then you'll find how fast it really is. :)

BTW...one tip is that if you have an item selected in the workspace, click your middle mouse button in the Link Editor and your selection will show in the middle of the Link Editor for easy editing. :)

Hmm, staircase is nothing that will be animated or otherwise altered IMHO. So why don't you just make the whole thing one object, using boolean? At least after you adjusted all the stairs the staircase should stay the same. So why not make it one object? Am I getting something wrong?

Yeah, I like shortcut buttons, and the three main ones missing in TS are "Unglue All", "Glue All", and "Select Object using Rectangle/Lasso".

I don't even know where the LE is lol and it looks way too complex for me :)
