@ Brian

Ah so you get texture color speculars instead the usual white ones. Cool idea. :)

-Jack.Huh? I'm using truespace 3.2, my way of making a metal shader Is turning the ambient glow off, making it shiny, but not two shiny (about two thirds is about right) And turning raytracing on and tweaking the ray depth until I get something I like:p (a slight bump map helps too)

Hmm... maybe it's something different in 3.2 then. Ah well.

Here's my 2nd entry:

How much can you add in addition to the main model in a speed model challenge?

You'll have to check with Daybe on this since he's doing the moderating, but I think as long as it's resonably part of your model and adds something to it, then go for it. For example if we were doing toasters, I think it would be ok to model an electrical outlet the toaster is pluged into, but I don't know if I'd model the wall and countertop unless it was fairly basic and generally used for background. The point being to showcase your model so it should really be the focus and everything else is just eye candy and to help with composition and reflections...

Also are we suppose to critique others as they post?

How long does each challenge last?

I think it's ok to critique. These challanges are for us to improve our skills.

Daybe set the end date for the challenge to be:

"Deadline - 12.00 AM G.M.T. Tuesday 31st of October 2006"

So looks like we're going with about a week on each challenge.

Thought I would let people know that Johny was kind enough to offer a house he modeled and is willing to share if we decide to go forward with say a lighting or render challenge, let's all thank him for his wonderful model. A collective thank you. ;) go to Link (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=16012#postid16012)

As far as adding additional objects, I would say keep it to a minimum and make the main item the focus of the image. You could always take it further on your own.

I'd say, whatever you get done during the 2 hour window.
If you end up with a great model that inspires a larger scene, feel free to start another thread like this one. (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=1495)

My second attempt, not sure if adding layers in photoshop was allowed, so I showed them individually too.

It's rough and it's crude but at least it's an entry! I have a better idea but don't know if I can get it done before the deadline.

I will confess I had a go at this challenge, but have to admit I didn't come close to finishing it within the time limit, or by the deadline [or at all :o]. If I had done a drawing of it before-hand, I might have stood a chance of doing it in time, but I was making it up as I went along, with only a basic idea of how I wanted it to look. It was definitely an interesting learning experience though, & I may well have a go with the next 1 [depending on theme].

That 'wheelchair' is just brilliant - I love the recycled Lambo parts (and textures), sheer class! Nice job on the deckchairs too.

I only found this thread yesterday and realised too late that the deadline was midnight last night so am too late to have a go, so I hope there will be another challenge soon. I've seen other forum contests (elsewhere) decided by poll, but with a fairly small/quiet forum like this, you'd probably have to allow at least a week for voting to get enough voters to make it fair. But it may be easier than choosing an impartial judge, unless you could persuade one of the Caligari guys to judge? Don't know that you really need a 'winner' - this simply makes a great showcase for the imagination/ability of everyone taking part - some great designs here.

If they are recycled from her Lambo project that would mean neither of her entries qualify [the deck chair 1 was posted after the deadline], which would be a shame, as they're both great.

No-where in the rules does it say you can't re-use bits from another model. I only imported a wheel rim which I could've re-made in about a minute if I'd had to but seeing as it's about speed modelling I took the quicker option! :)

Yes the deck-chairs were posted about an hour after the deadline but they were finished before it! I figured it was the fun of the taking-part that counts so did it anyway. (how about if I pretend I forgot to put my watch back on Sunday?)

Having rechecked I see you are correct that it doesn't specifically mention it, though it does say "Create the model in the specified time", which I perceived to mean that the whole thing had to be modelled within the specified time.

Fine with me, but remember next spring to only put it 1 hour forward instead of 2. ;)

I know it doesn't qualify [because of time limit & deadline], but I just thought I'd show what I was working on. Nothing fancy, just a regular wooden garden chair:

Ha, great thread, a ton of great work here. I've not entered as I am a "slow modeler" and not a "speed modeler" haha.

The deckchair image is real funny, even in 3D I can't put these things up. Mind your fingers!

Awww bummer. I was thinking that the 12:00 AM deadline was tuesday night.... don't know where that idea came from... doh looks like I missed out on entering my holloween chair... Ah well I'll do it up anyway because it's a cool concept.

Congrats on all the entries.

I do think we need to be more clear in the future that *all* the parts need to be modelled from scratch durring the time limit. Otherwise you could keep reseting the 2 hours and bring in parts from your previous 2 hours.

Can't wait to see what the winner picks for the new topic. Hopefully it'll be something as flexible as this was where people can be really creative with the entries.

Sorry for the confusion, I guess we should maybe use 11:59 pm instead of 12:00 am as it looks like this can be confusing. So I guess the competition is closed. I am really impressed by all the entries and by the response. Let's hope this will continue.

So now, I think this should be put this to a vote and let everyone decide who the winner is. I know we have discussed this already, I don't mind doing it but to be fair it may be better if we all have a say. Remember the the winner of this competition will create the topic for next challenge and has bragging rights :p.

Well Daybe's chair was really cool (but he already started the show)
Alien's didn't have a beer holder.
Witche's chair poked fun of my age.
J-Edward's made chairs my parents wouldn't allow me to sit in.(so their not chairs!)
Brian's chairs are really cool but its still that parent thing.....
Matski007 chair I could never get out of.
Egraffiti's chair I KNOW I wouldn't get out of.
Hemulin's chair remindes me of the dentist.

So my pick is for ..........Stevebe's "Tongue Chair"
Also he gets extra points for using 7.11 player:)

One of the challenges should be modeling a "Trophy" for these speed challenges. The winner can use it as their avatar until the next winner takes it away.

So... who gets to vote?
Only contestants or the Forum in general?
Anyone know how to set up a poll thingy?
Let's Rock the Vote!

I think anyone should be able to choose, A poll can only have 10 options so this may be out as we have more entries, I think just posting you vote here is fine. Since I started the challenge I will bow out of the challenge of course.
