Ok I am really having a hard time making a cliff face look right. Does anybody have any good ideas on how to this and make it look right?

Is it above an ocean where the waves have worn caves and arches into the base, or is it near a river with a waterfall cresting over the middle? Or maybe it's a plateau with sheer drops around 3 of it's sides. Then again maybe it's a ravine?

;)

Try thinking about how it fits into your image and concept of the surrounding area and then search out photo references.

I think Petra and all I see is the dog from the childrens TV programme Blue Peter. That's the only Petra I know of so you'll need to be a bit more specific. Unless, of course, you want your cliffs shaped like a canine??

think about how the grain in the cliffs should be running. dirrerent rock run different ways.

i did the cliffs in this image by boolean-ing loads of shapes together then adding

SS, they're not perfect but i works in places

it's fairly deceptive, the castle took the longest, but all the texturing was fairly simple, and pyrocluster finished it off with the fire. I think it took about 3 or 4 days.

nope, same thing. You could try making a cube and sweeping it out in different directions to get a similar result without the hassle of booleans, like this (sorry i don't have the images of the un-smoothed rock, lost it when i crossed to model side):

Thanks for the reply. I am currently expermienting in Bryce 6 ussing it's terrain generator. I think it does a pretty good job of terrain. If that does not work then I will give yours ago.

castles often had a wooden hoarding built around the battlements, the interior of the building, the floors and roof would be wooden also.

Of course the real answer is 'i thought it would look good', the there was more wood in a castle than most people think.
