A lot of great entries will be a close vote I'm sure....
Mike
P.S. The poll will run for 6 days to try to pull it back towards the weekend without drastically cutting the vote time. |

Yep.. this is only the 2nd time I've looked at the thread - the first was to vote and the second was to reply.
Just because you did or did not enter is no reason to not vote. Please vote and let us know what you think of our efforts!!! |

I thought that the SMC and the MMC were mainly about trueSpace "modeling" (along with good materials).......not who can find the best materials and doctor it up with Paint Shop Pro ? It seems that the way the voting goes around here, I'll never get recognized unless I enter the Caligari Challenge or enter all my email addresses along with my family and friends ! Nothing against your win Breach, but I thought that Nigec's "Sinking Planets" was truely the best SMC......and I kind of hated to see that My "3rd Rocks" (which was the favorite one I did) didn't make in the challenge. Oh well, maybe I'll still be inspired to submit in the future ? I'm sure that I'm not the only one out there who can see this ! |

This SMC went badly wrong, and it wasn't Mike's fault, he got put under a lot of pressure to define a very wide open SMC into something more simple... "simple" just doesn't work for me and i don't think it does for you either Mr 3D
In the future, I think whatever subject is submitted first should stick and shouldn't be subject to change.. i just get the feeling Mike felt bullied into changing his mind, although it wasn't intentional.. I would done the same in his shoes
Winning for us mere motals should be an achievement, not a burden when it comes to picking the next..
Whether its a wide playing field or something simple the creative loonies will do their epic creations and the more focused will do their thing regardless on how tight the subject restrictions are..
Anyway roll out the next :) |

You made some keen observations Mr. 3D. Some of them not true.
However your discovering that the focus of the SMC has changed from "Modeling" an object into "Giftwrapping" the object was a direct hit!
To have a Challenge focused on a Sphere didn't exactly show modeling skills to me. Not blaming anybody because this shift in focus has been going on for a while now. I hope everyone looks at the first SMC Challenges to see how far it has shifted.
I really think SMC should be about serious Modeling, period. If you want eye candy join the MMC.
As far as voting goes, please get your rewards from "doing the Challenge" and not the votes themselves. That is how I feel about it. |

Tell ya what guys..this can be sloved very easily. I agree with MR 3d and Stenie about their views. I know I have been a bit let down when I put alot into my model just to see it get 0 votes. I say on the next one that it just be a model. No textures. Make this one a blueprint of sorts. That way you are voting on a model. Make it all base colors to seperate parts. Sure it may be bland but hey it will be what the SMC is all about. I see it this way. What good does it to to have 2 hrs to model then tons of time to tweak it with lights and textures. I say 2 hrs period. The topics should be objects not scenes..that is what the MMC is for. Just my 2 cents worth..anybody got change? |

Yes this one was very messed up. Sorry.
I think if I had stuck to my original it would have been "wide open" but at least fun for everyone who wanted to enter (not blaming anyone, it was my decision to switch). Sorry.
Mr. 3d I wouldn't give up, especially because of this one.

I apologize in advance for any offense I might give with this post.
Please forgive any such thing.
I tend to vote first for modeling, and second for the final image.
for instance...
In this competition, these were up for consideration:
"The DARK Side"/ "3rd Rocks"
really, a bunch of spheres and a torus. But well composited. with a little more work on lighting, would go well for the Caligallery competition. Just too dark for my taste, and I didn't really learn anything from it. Sorry.
Earth
a simple sphere. Nicely textured.
"Circling Round Uranus.....Last Call !"
excellent use of low-poly modeling. Here the textures and lighting make the scene.
Saturn with two moons
3 spheres and a torus.
The textures make it a very nice scene and it could go into the Caligllery competition.
Planets Collide - no wireframe, but I can see how it's made (I think)
we are supposed to include a wireframe, so I didn't include this one even through it's very well done and should go into the Caligallery competition.
Gouged planet in a nebula
not too bad, but once again just a sphere with a bit of Boolean to it. I bit more action or structure to the nebula would make this a good entry for the Caligallery too.
"Collaboration"
good wireframe and good composition of the objects. Just no "focus" to my eye.
Sinking Planets
good composition of spheres.
"Needs Watering ?"
a simple sphere, but the explanation of the technique and the subject matter got my vote for this one.
Child's dream of space
lots of Boolean action on this simple sphere - showing the detail that one can get starting from a simple object.
It's mine, so I didn't vote for it.
Special thanks for the person who did!!!
so...
There wasn't very much modeling done on this one. If my decision was based on modeling alone, I would be more tempted to have voted for "Collaboration" because it had the most actual modeling done to it. But even if this is the "speed modeling" challenge, a complicated model is not necessarily the best. I need to not only see the model, but how it's possible to learn something from it. In this case, I learned a good way to take a picture and add a 3-d element to it. I honestly would have voted for my own if someone else had done it because of the elements in the model. Even though the composition could have been better.
I would not say that the competition has been going down. I would say that the selection of entries for THIS one was more simplistic than previous ones. even the last one was done very well. The subject was "Bling" and a well modeled pocket watch won. The wireframe for it shows how detailed the modeling was for that entry.
NOTE: I never vote for an entry that is missing the wireframe for the primary subject. Upon further looking at the one entry that is missing that detail, it could have gotten my vote.
EDIT: re-reading the comments thread shows that I did not model the correct thing, since it was changed to a planet or satellite instead of a vehicle. So that was my mistake in modeling. |

...Who said that?!
Not sure ?! Must've come from "The Dark Side" !:D
On another note, even though Nez's "Pumpkin-Bot" was the best character, I still voted for your "Pumpkinhead" because I found the modeling of the entire scene more appealing. But that's probably where you and I may see eye to eye....I would rather spend my time creating an entire scene, rather than a single object that may never find its place in a future scene. |

Pumpkinhead set out to have a body and limbs lol.. but like my wood working skills he ended up getting lumps chopped off and ended up on the floor
Creating a scene, messing with lights just feels more rewarding, the bling contest i tried not to and and it was the one i didn't really like the result of |

Well, as the current SMC winner and moderator of the next challenge, I guess I should add my two-pennys worth.
Firstly, thanks to Mike for running SMC #39. I've had the honour to run a couple of these challenges now and believe me, it's not as easy as you might think. It demands a lot of thought and time. So thanks again, Mike for sparing us both and running the challenge for the community.
Congrats to Nigec on a closely fought second place and a big well done to all the other competitors for some great work and for supporting the SMC. :)
As for my entry, well, when I saw Mike getting into difficulty at the start of the SMC, I thought I'd best show him some support and fired in an entry straight away. The model was deliberately simple because a) I didn't have the time to make a serious contribution and b) the intention was to show forum newcomers just how easy it could be to enter. I had absolutely no idea that it would win or that it would cause such controversy. :o
As for votes, I've experienced both ends of the spectrum with my Wallace entry in the character SMC not registering a single vote. Sure I was disappointed, even slightly miffed, but I learned a hell of a lot about organic modelling. Suffice to say, anybody entering these competitions just to get votes is in for a whole world of pain.:D Not only that, but you will never be able to account for individual taste. Over the last 10 months or so I have seen people rant and rave about how good something is and I'm sat there thinking whaaaat, its absolutely bloomin' awful. Perhaps that is my loss, after all, art is a very subjective matter. Right?
As for the SMC's topic\subject matter, it has been a point of debate on these forums ever since I first logged in. People want this, people don't like that. “Lets have something really simple like a widget” says one. “ A widget...BORING”, says another. And so it goes on. My take on all this...simple. If you want the SMC topic to be a simple widget, or the rules to state no textures, or the model should only be lit by a single candle at a thousand yards, then crack out a stunning model, wipe the floor with the votes and then moderate the next challenge and show everyone just how it should be done (which of course would sound a lot more convincing coming from someone who hadn't just won the latest challenge with a single sphere :o).
As for the next SMC, well whilst admittedly a return of the SMC to its roots may not be such a bad thing, if then only 3 people are interested enough to enter and the voting numbers become even less enthusiastic than they are now, then it could all go belly-up real quick. So, I'm going to take a couple days to mull over some ideas and peruse the previous SMC's; perhaps even look at a couple of rule changes and then post something after Crimbo. Because nobody is going to be sat at their computer over Crimbo, right?
Have a happy holiday all. |

I feel bad for MikeJoel getting stuck in the middle of all this. He did a great job running this Challenge in spite of us. I love his work and hope he continues to help us make this place better.
Breech Block now has the reins so he now has the driver's seat. (or hot seat)
In the end keeping everyone interested is whats important. Good luck. |

SMC's are fun, I just been super busy doing other stuff. This one had alot of potential and I was going to do two worlds colliding but never got a chance to do it. Looking forward to the next challenge. |
