How's this for last minute? :D

Ok, this is MY dream house called ATAS (All Terrain Air Ship) "AA1"
I get to see the world in style (5 bedrooms, 2 baths). In case 2012 becomes a disasterous year, it includes: greenhouse (housed in the bubble, {made of proprietary material}), dining hall, full kitchen, workshop area, Defense room, meeting/theater room, and transit area (which houses 2 or more ATV's, and mini submarine).
The 'gondola' (also made of proprietary material [think 'Buckyball'] is built to be an air-home if living on land becomes untenable, and can also become a boat-home in case of emergency.
The propulsion system works in the air and on the ocean (proprietary engines system).
The sub exits out the bottom bay doors.
There's more to say but I have a few hours to finish the final render, so off I go for now.

Man, Life is truly funny (or maybe I've had another massive Chi disruption).
I left for Greece right when this challenge got started, and when I was coherent there (hiccup...) I thought abt this dreamhouse thing. I first created a (almost conventional) house with two floors, an art gallery room, 'crow's nest' studio, attached greenhouse, topped by alternative energy panels (my own design, that should sell like hotcakes, if I only had start up money), and a secret (shhhhh) minisub base.
While enjoying the shores in Europe, I came up with the idea of combining all my wants into an airship that had all I needed (including the submarine :)).
When I got back here, I had 4 days left. Took care of business for three days and cleared the schedule to work on this pic for the last day for entry, figuring I could pull this off in a day (yuup... like crammin' for finals). It woulda worked ("I coulda been a contenda I tell ya") except... my mouse was giving me fits, and finally wouldn't work at all. After I went and got a new one, it started to work fine, then crapped out. The new mouse would from time to time make its own way around the screen, sending my airship parts waaay off to the far edges of the unseen screen, and to add frustration to injury (or is it the other way round?), as I was finalizing the shaders and colors, not having saved the last few steps of my construction, the puter did a total freeze, where even the task manager wouldn't work. When I rebooted, had lost the submarine work, the tethers, the shaders, the colors, the placements...
Ain't lookin for sympathy; just venting . Since I came in with my entry after 6pm, an extension would not be fair, nor do I want one. Also, the image I entered isn't worthy, so please do not waste a good vote since I am technically disqualified.
Good luck to you all who entered, and thanx for ... listening? Reading.
Now... where's that vodka? :D

You asked me not to enter you Rendering but guess what? I liked your idea of a floating dream house and want to share it with everyone. You might not have the finished version you wanted but just attempting to get a finished piece into the Challenge meant a lot to me. Win or Loose you are now one of my buds!:)

I'll toast an Ouzo in your honer!

Hmmm, got room for an extra passenger? I'm supposed to retire in 2012.. I wonder if there'll be anything to retire to.. I was really hoping I have a chance to play a bit.. :p

I thought I was the only one wondering if we're really in for trouble

It's a cool entry even if we can 't vote for it.. I hope you'll finish and do a final render - I'd like to see it completed .. it's fun :D

(Dragneye humbly bows) Thank you Steinie for the encouragement, and to you also Butterpaw. Alas, the rules are rules, and fair is fair, so I'll try again next month. I was really pushing the envelope when I tried to complete this project in basically a day. But heck, it almost worked.

So, because of your kind words, and cuz it is a viable project (who knows, I may win Lotto next week and be able to build this for real), and cuz I view this as a wonderful way to live once I retire, not to mention the Mayan predictions (;) @ Butterpaw), I'll try to finish this and post at least a meaningful render.

Ok, here's what I would have liked to enter (for that one wonderful soul who actually voted for my nonvalid entry, Thank you very very much. A very kind deed indeed)

I won't get into the technical specifications (many materials and structures are proprietary and patent pending:D), but for one, there is a greenhouse on top of the gondola. The balloon material is supposed to be see-thru, but I couldn't get the right mix of see-thru and reflexive, so it'll have to do (I used the 'glass' setting and altered the values but it never worked. Any suggestions for use in future paintings, er, renders, would be appreciated).

The whole pic was created in tS except for a softening of the clouds using PSP in the back plane which was a NURBS half cylinder.

Any suggestions on how it could have looked better with the present composition (wasn't my first choice, but since I used it in a previous image here, I just stuck with it)?

the see-through quality in a balloon is always problematic... Try using tracing paper instead. That way, it will look more like a skin than a solid mass. You can tweek the color and transparency until it looks better. and you won't get a magnifying glass effect (bad for any flammables below). :D

Ummm... is tracing paper a material in 6.6 or something?

Hi Dragneye,

It may be that you have the reflectivity up too high. The higher the reflectivity the more of the reflection that shows and the less of what is on the other side of the transmissive material.

Another option is to use fresnel with VRay which varies the reflectivity based on the angle of the surface to the viewer.
