Ok so Ive had to put a lot on hold while I do this project for my University Assignment. We have to sketch a character, model it, rig it and then animate it in a 15 second storyboarded animation. We are being taught how to rig in Maya and so far I like it, however Maya seems to lack much in the way of mirror modeling so for this assignment ive decided to make my character in Truespace and then do the rest in Maya. The animation will involve two characters (using same model with subtle differences) having some kind of a slow motion bullet time fight ontop of a building.

I havent been too good with character modeling and this is my first full blown organic character model (only ever made robots).

I have designed the character based on Tim Burton characters such as Jack Skeleton, long legs and arms etc so this is not fully anatomically correct.

Let me know what you think, and im unsure whether it should post any of my work on it once I go into Maya.

thanks guys

I think i need to learn how to rig in TS anyway, so ill try fit some time into rigging it in TS as well as maya, should be interesting but also beneficial, i doubt they will be too unalike.

Ill show my progress for both.

Updates will follow in a few days, as i am at my parents house this weekend i dont have access to either program (i doubt they will run too well on this laptop)

I see Tim Burton's influence of his Nightmare and Corpse Bride lanky look. Good choice!
How do you plan to do the hands?

I think you will find ts rigging surprisingly easy. I doubt it is so easy in maya.

Unless he's Mr Benn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Benn)

He does, they will become apparent when he is rigged. The style im going for is that they wont be really defined, the proportions are like a doll with straight arms and legs, he will simply bend at the joints little bit like Woody in Toy Story

Oh no, now I have the Mr Benn theme tune stuck in my head.

I do like the abstract, arty kind of look to these characters and looking forward to seeing the animation made using them :)

Thanks!

Tom

Just got internet working again in my house, dont ask! lol UK Internet providers are all liars and cheats!

Here is the latest update, have finished the model and since put into Maya to smooth out and begin adding the skeleton. Unfortunatly I havent added enough edge loops in the arms and such so that is my next task, along with making some blendshape heads (in maya you can create various versions of the same thing ie a head with different lip positions and blend between them).

Let me know what you think:
