After the realism challenge of Nov I though I'd swicth to a broader concept. I didn't want to set an overtly Xmas theme but I think this has plenty of scope for that if the mood takes you!

The idea is to produce an image that in someway captures the end of a journey - it could be a traveller returning home (for xmas?), a photo-finish of a race, a fly being swatted (ouch!), anything that show's something/someone coming to the end of their travels. Of, course 'journey' doesn't need to be a physical trip - it can be a journey of discovery, for example :)

Here's the rules (from Jack's original Challenge) :

The idea is to have a challenge that is geared more towards the complete 3D development cycle from concept through modeling, surfacing, lighting, rendering, and post process. This is a chance for TSer's to really show their stuff and help motivate the production of portfolio quality images.

1.) Submission expresses the topic. If topic is an object, then it must include at least one instance of the object which should be the focus of the image.

2.) Use your own work. No pre-made purchased or free models, please.

3.) Start a Work In Progress thread for your submission.

4.) Submission should be one image and a link to your WIP thread.

5.) Indicate tools used to create your submission. TS should be the primary application used to create the image. Post Processing in a paint program is ok.

It's important that everyone who's planning to enter start a WIP thread. With difficult challenges like this many entries are over ambitious and don't make it to completion so in many cases it may be likely that judging will have to take place on the WIPs.

Deadline: what you think about making this a 2 month challenge? It will be a busy time of year for most especially around the 3rd/4th week :) I suggest a deadline of Thursday 24th Jan, with a week of voting till the end of Jan

Good luck!!

Good theme, Blakeo and congrats on you well deserved win! :)

I already have an image concept that I've been thinking about for a few months now that will fit perfectly with this theme. Soon as I get it sketched up, I'll start a WIP thread. I'm happy about the extended deadline date. This project I have in mind will be even more ambitious than my space scene attempt.

I can't wait to see what Wizard comes up with for this one! :D

jayr, One or two small premade objects would be OK, I think, as long as they're your own models and as long as the majority of work is new. It shouldn't be the main focus though.

Not me, I have no talent.

I can learn just as well without competing.

James, you forgot the "Fun" part. That is one reason I do it. Makes you do something you might not normally do. As you already know these things are by choice and you have made yours.

Anyone else want to join the Fun?

I agree with you Stenie. I am not all that good either..but man I learn alot. I think I am getting better every image as well. I learn a new trick it seems everytime I do one. It is because of people like you Steine, Prodigy, Tom and to many to name.

Despite things being manic at work (and I expect manic over the Christmas hols too!) I am hoping to enter this time after all - I do have an idea that I want to have a shot at, but I'm just trying to finish something else off that I started on a whim first! (not even the post box either..)

I'll hopefully be able to post something before breaking up for Christmas, even if it's only a concept sketch, but I'd like to have something to show by then, even if it's only a rough working setup. I'm actually quite looking forward to it - it onlves trying a couple of things I've never done before, so should be fun.

Like you, I wouldn't rate my abilities very highly, but I do think it's fun to try out some of these challenges (and the SMCs) - particularly as I'm a bit lacking on the creativity front in terms of just coming up with something to work on myself! Time is always a struggle, but I'm a moderately quick modeller so I can churn out simple objects fairly quickly, but it's doing a good job of finishing off that's my greatest weakness still... Anyway, hope to join in soon...

James don't say that. You have talent... you just may not have discovered it fully yet.
These challenges are not about anything other than exciting your creative side to think out of your box. Or, throwing in new input INto your box. I Never have a lack of ideas; every conversation, everything I read, gives me multiple inspirations, multiple 'visions' of images to create. THAT is not my problem. I am Too visual!... lol. My weak side is the technical knowhow to create it in tS, but that hasn't stopped me from tryin... nor should it ever, for anyone.
Start with something small. One item, a general concept (hint, hint, the topic ;)). At first don't try to envision a whole scene, or complete image. Start easy/simple, and then go to hard. Or, start hard, to excite your right/creative brain, then worry abt the 'how' or technical/left brain. Otherwise, artistically speaking, your brain gets too much of a "I can't do that' and you shut down.
I have started something for evey one of these challenges, or contests here. I never had time to execute, so... silence.
As Nez has now inspired me, I will at least post my idea, and hopefully the gods of time will allow me the respite to finish it. And as Steinie has said before, 1000+ members and only abt 15 post anything at all?!
WHY?
This isn't an exclusive club. This is a learners forum - free exchange of artistic ideas, styles, and inspirations. Any accomplishments, any gains, are firstly for oneself, and with that, all the rest benefit when shared. Don't hold back on yourself. Fear not! Creative Beauty awaits!
Come and give, come and try :D

I agree with both Nez and Dragneye. I am like nez in that I am getting better at modelling but whole scenes are a different matter! I have lots of ideas but my technical/artistic skill will not see them realised... yet.

But I'm realising that it's the getting involved - no matter what skill level or ability to complete your vision - that makes a community like this vibrant and interesting, and a great learning resource. And I am as guilty as anyone for not posting WIPs, so I'll try to rectify that... I have a scene I've been working on for *months* that I keep meaning to post to WIPs as I'm finding that I'm coming to dead ends with it all the time.

...and don't forget this challenge is over 2 months this time round so there's plenty of time after Xmas when things are less manic to get an idea up.

Well guys due to some things going on right now..I am going to have to drop out. There is no way that I can get this image done by Jan 24. Sorry if this boogers things up, but don't have much of a choice. Thanks and I can't wait to see the end result.

shame, it seemed to be going well; I'm hoping/trying to cobble together something rushed to enter at the last minute - hope to post my WIP tomorrow...

maybe there could be a short extension - how much longer do you think you need?

I don't know that it would take to long, but I have had 2 months. So I realy don't have anybody to blame but me. So I don't want to impose on all thoes who have played by the rules. I will see if I can't get it done by then. If not then that is ok.

Hey everyone - I've not been able to particpate round here much lately - bad timing when running this challenge eh?

Thanks rjeff for stepping in with final image thread.

Don't forget today is the deadline so get all entries in to the final image thread, and please include a link to the WIP. Even if you don't have a final image please post a link to the WIP - it all counts in this challenge. I'll put the poll up tomorrow.
