Howdy ya'll,
You guys on the MMC dream house thread got me to thinking...so today after church I sat down to fiddle around and I kinda came up with something. Still very much a WIP and any and all comments / crits are welcome. And in the tradition of the MMC, there is a wireframe of the model too.

Great house, with the dome in the middle it looks like an observatory, with a sliding part of the roof it would be a dreamhouse for an astronomer!
I like the way the side houses are positioned in a corner.
The arch of the central porch is a bit too big, it touches the roof. What is the round building on the right? as the observatory's library it is just perfect, as a conservatory I would give it bigger windows.
Looking forward how this proceeds

@jamesmc, steinie: Thanks for the encouragement, guys!
@Georg: I'll work on the entry arch this evening. The round structure to the right is supposed to be a conservatory. I'll work on refining it also. An observatory, eh? hmmmm. Thanks for the good comments!
@frootee: Gondola? You mean like a gazebo? hmmm...another interesting idea...thanks!
As some might know, architecture has not been my strong suit in the past. This model basically made itself while I looked on. We'll have to see what the Lord has planned for my 3D future :)

Yeah Gazebo. Now that I think about it, a Gondola is a boat isn't it? Or maybe I'm wrong ... Again.... :p
That is a cool lookin house opie. It would be fun to run around in it in FPN!

Thanks. The more I think about it since you commented, maybe I should do the gazebo instead of the observatory...it might run up the poly count of the scene, but it sure would reduce the render times :) So far the interior is pretty much gutted...just set up some geometry to show through the windows for now.

Yes sir! That and some other minor details are coming soon :) |

Nice Cupola (http://architecture.about.com/library/blgloss-cupola.htm) opiejuan - nice house! ... with a Gondola yer gonna need a mountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gondola_lift) or somebody to sing (http://www.wocsdice2007.org/res/default/gondola.jpg) ... :D and a Gazebo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazebo)
is similar in shape to a cupola, but is located on the ground, often in a garden... actually, it also reminded me of a minaret (http://www.islamicarchitecture.org/architecture/minaret-types.html), especially one found on Lamu a small island off the coast of Kenya.
I think a house with an observatory on top would be a cool dream house, actually :)
I look forward to watching this.. |

Nice job on this opiejuan :)
Thank you :) The basic design I used for the ends of the building and the cupola came from This pic (http://www.thedisneyblog.com/photos/uncategorized/haunted_mansion.jpg) A little artistic license and a poly here and there and VIOLA! a 3D model!

Woa! That's a lot of house! I'm not quite THAT ambitious yet :)
Maybe someone else out there might be? Hmmmm? Any takers?
pics here (http://www.westernncattractions.com/images/Biltmore1.jpg) and here (http://www.travelwritersmagazine.com/images/PHOTO_2_BILTMORE_HOUSE.jpg) .. I'm sure there's more out there and it looks like Biltmore has more than 1 building out there too. |

No you really can't butterpaw. Me and the wife took the behind the scenes tour about a year ago and that is the ticket. You get to go into the parts of the house that has not be restored so you can see how it looked orignially. You also get to go in to the sub-basement to see how the house is heated and cooled and see the oringial power grid he used. Heck he even has a gas powerd generator. |

ok, I filled in the textures, tho I still have a lot of tweaking to do there. I also replaced the conservatory with a temporary gazebo..it was just a quicky 20 minute mockup. oh! and an old character of mine, Tony always wanted to be a butler, so I let him feel important and stand above the front steps :) |

Thanks guys!
I have to admit...I'm not very good at 3D landscaping. I mean I have a few images and alpha maps for some trees, but they just don't look good in this scene and often cast bad shadows. I have some really low poly attempts at trees, but they don't look good either...one example is just beyond the gazebo. I want to create a circular drive with maybe a water fountain in the center ( cliche' I know ) and I can make an imagemap for the ground and actual driveway and even add some faces to the base cubee to give the ground a little character...but shrubs and trees are kicking my butt. Any advice? |

Hey opie you may want to check out Prodigy's tutorial about making grass. It looks very nice and works well.

@rjeff - Thanks! I've read over this tutorial before but haven't tried it yet. Guess we know what I'll be doing tonight .. or as soon as I can get the trueParticles plugin reinstalled and authorized :)
oh! and thanks Prodigy! |

Time for a new update. I'm still working on the grass, so I've faked it for now. Added some other greenery though and have been working to knock the poly count for the house itself to just under 38,000 from 64,000+. Still have a few texture trouble spots to mend.
I've also been working to model up some low poly trees. I think they just come out looking better than the alpha mapped planes thingy. Still have a lot of work to do there though. Comments and critiqs welcome. |

Some bump for the road and its walls maybe?
Really like the lay out and perspective. |

I like the way this is shaping up!
A couple of suggestions and queries:
Are you going to put a texture on the 'observatory' dome? Greened copper would be a typical finish for this kind of roof shape...
Stone texture on the observatory tower (from the main roof up) seems a bit large scale-wise, compared to the stonework for the rest of the walls.
Leafs of plants closest to centre portion of house seem a little large?
The car - I realise you may have just taken the VW model that comes with TS as a placeholder - but I hope you're going to replace it with something a little classier! This doesn't really look like a VW Golf kind of house, unless it belongs to the maid/cleaner, in which case it ought to be round the back somewhere ;) If you don't have many car models, let me know, I've got loads of free ones fromm the net - may need some texture tweaking but otherwise useable. Want a Lexus or Merc? :D Perhaps an Audi TT... |

Thank you :) Yes, I have a lot to do on the driveway. The timbers along the drive are just a place holder for the moment. I'm thinking of white pipe looking stands with chain stretched through the tops, but I'm open to better suggestions.

Gracias to you too :)
Yeah, I'm struggling really hard with the texture for the dome. I'll see if I can come up with a copper patina like you suggest. As for the stone on the tower, I see what you mean.
Plants are still in test mode too. I'd love to replace the 'mess' of leaves on both sides of the steps more like a basic hedge rather than the clump of alien looking 'stuff' I have there now :) You got the car part right. I just popped it in to help me with overall scale. I was going to put my T bucket with the blown Hemi in there :D Merc, eh? hmmm. Let's talk. |

This is very cool.. coming right along!
I am no help with technical matters,(I'm too new, still) but artistically, I like the developments..
Keep in mind that aged copper gets a green patina.. could look very nice... |
