Thank you :) Yes, I have a lot to do on the driveway. The timbers along the drive are just a place holder for the moment. I'm thinking of white pipe looking stands with chain stretched through the tops, but I'm open to better suggestions.

Gracias to you too :)

Yeah, I'm struggling really hard with the texture for the dome. I'll see if I can come up with a copper patina like you suggest. As for the stone on the tower, I see what you mean.

Plants are still in test mode too. I'd love to replace the 'mess' of leaves on both sides of the steps more like a basic hedge rather than the clump of alien looking 'stuff' I have there now :) You got the car part right. I just popped it in to help me with overall scale. I was going to put my T bucket with the blown Hemi in there :D Merc, eh? hmmm. Let's talk.

T bucket with blown hemi? Que? Your lingo is beyond my comprehension..:D

I'm just a modest Brit with limited car know-how - 'fraid I'm not sure what you're on about...!

As for the Mercs - well I'm not a fan, but I've got several on my pc - just let me know and I'll email 'em over or attach them to this thread.

For the copper, I was thinking of something like the following - copper gets to be a fairly pale green if it's been up there more than 20 years - so depends whether your house is actually old, or is a modern 'reproduction'...

Expect you should be able to cook up something with a fairly simple texture - maybe a procedural with very subtle colour variation?

Thanks for the reference pic Nez.

and sorry, I guess the T Bucket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-bucket)stuff is an American thingy, and I wasn't serious about it anyway, just making a funny (and that didn't work either haha).

I'll get back with you on the car model. I should go ahead and work out the points brought up so far. Thanks!

The stone tex on the tower is a little too large in scale/ irregular.
Looks more like patio flooring than structural stone.
I like the idea of a copper roof.... but I think real observatory roofs are white for a reason; probably thermodynamics. Not sure if you want to let being a slave to reality interfere with a good texture job.
Hedges would be more formal and (e)stately, and possibly less of a polygon hit than the leafy stuff or lots of chain.
Yo, Word to the T-Bucket! (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=T+Bucket&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi)
There's even one (http://www.recumbents.com/MARS/pages/proj/spol/projspolRosebud.html) for W!zard! ;^) (sans Hemi, blown or otherwise)

Uhm.. looking at it some more, I realize that the tower would probably have some flashing at the edge between tower and roof... some sort of delineation.. ;)

@RenderPal Mick (Spacekdet) How about I try it with the copperish texture and work on the white also. I'll post them both and let you guys decide.

The railroad tie/timbers, chain rails, alien trees and bushes are outta there! I'll start working on some hedges asap. I do kinda like the tree near the camera on the right hand side tho. Maybe even a couple of topiaries?

Personally, I think T buckets are classey enough for a stately manison and it looks like perhaps you do too :) I'll replace the VW with some REAL muscle :) I think I still have my SRV! Ranchero somewhere...let me do some digging...

@Butterpaw - Good eye. I'll work on that transition too. Thank you

On the tower rock texture. You guys think I should just scale what I have down? Look for a different imagemap altogether? OR maybe just use the same as on the walls of the house?

It's a nice texture so start by scaling it down, if you don't get obvious repeating patterns then hurrah, job done. If you do, then it's back to your texture libraries or photoshop.

Looking mighty fine so far and I particularly like the foreground tree slightly in the frame. Could do with a Lamborghini parked outside though! :-)

Thanky Kate...I'll do as you say.

Would that be a black super sexy Lambo with tan interior? WOOHOO! Yer on!

Well, I think it's a little dependant about what you want the dome to be - if it really is intended to be an observatory (you never said it was, it was all iof us speculating that it might be!) then it probably ought to be white or silver, and probably needs some extra geometry to show where the opening section is (look at Google Images for observatory roofs); howver if it is a cupola then copper or the same type of tile as on your main roof would be more fitting, along with a spire or weather vane perhaps.

Topiary hedges along the driveway would be quite cool! I think the foreground tree works better than those close to the house at the moment - the leaf scale seems more appropriate?

Well, the T-bucket is quite classy I admit, but not sure you'd call it sophisticated... unless this is the Munsters' mansion? :D I'd vote for the Lambo in this context... or a nice Rolls/Bentley/Jag! Looks a bit peaceful for muscle cars, although that could make for a nice dichotomy in the image...

@Butterpaw - Good eye. I'll work on that transition too. Thank you

A good point - you would also expect to see flashing along the transition of the low roofs with the centre part of the house to protect the wall.http://www.albany-roofing.co.uk/roof-parts.htm

Thanks for your comments Neil :) And let me start off with a CONGRATS! on the HM in the CaliGallery. Beautiful detail in that image sir.

Excellent suggestions.

To be honest, I have plans to use this house in a future animation and it will likely end up with a toon shader anyway (ToonUpPro, of course ( Hi Simon! :) )) ....but the potential for an interesting still image and the need to knock the rust off my 3D skills is driving me on. Input and ideas from all of you can only help...and I am very grateful.

BUT! Now you got me thinking of Herman and Lilly....oh man! hahahaha

I imagine the MunsterMobile outside with a realtor's sign with 'SOLD' across it out in front. hahaha...this is goooood stuph :)

Well, thankyou too!

and yes, I like the idea of teh Munstermobile outside - but maybe you'd need to musty up the place a bit first - some broken windows, crooked walls, spooky trees, you know the kind of thing!:D

Man, this render took 10 times longer than previous ones to do and I had deleted all the plants except for the tree just right of frame. The part of the scene that caused the hold up was the lower 1/4th...below the car. Something is amiss me thinks. I'll look into it tomorrow.

So anyway, is this getting closer on the tower and dome?

edit: Sheeesh! I just rendered and posted...guess I shoulda looked closer at all the messups on the center roof section. Oh well

LOL! Sweet ride Space! It's even got room for a sack of lentils!

I love your mansion Opie - looking good - but dude, T-Buckets are NOT classy, go for the Lambo. Your mansion has that stately manor house look to it - it needs a Bentley or a Roller, perhaps a Jag or even an antique Bugatti.

Make the path gravel and park a coach and horses outside. Dilema over.

But then maybe everyone will offer up which different make of horse it needs to be? :)

LOL ..sue the contractor :D

It's coming along nicely.. definitely prefer the lawns and no 'railroad ties' car is cool... have fun with that I can just see a parade of classic cars around the drive.. (a party, perhaps?) ;)

A coach and horse would look pretty cool - think you could use the horse straight out of Poser if you've got it... (I'm pretty sure it's got a horse in the old version I've got). W!zard might be able to help out with a cart...

But I quite like the classic cars idea, not that I've got many of those - but I've got a few pre-war motors I could donate, plus the usual assortment of BMWs, Audis, the odd Lexus and McLaren F1, a few Ferraris and Porsches (including the ugly Cayenne), a few nice US motors like a '59 'vette and a Bel Air - no vintage Bugattis though, although I do have a Veyron! :D (not likely to get to say that ever again!)

Most of them came from http://dmi.chez-alice.fr/models1b.html - there’s still many others there too. Generally used AccuTrans to convert them to cob files (to preserve hierarchy) – tends to lose textures if there are any but many don’t have any (or wouldn’t need them at your distance) and usually need some shader tweaking whatever format I convert to…

hahaha! This is wonderful! Thank you ALL for the comments and ideas.

So basically what is being offered is ideas for 3 different eras of time...

1) prolly the mid to late 1800's with a carriage house.. horse and buggy days, hoop skirts, etc

2) the roaring 20's with long classy full fendered automobiles, maybe some art deco details here and there.

and finally

3) more current time frame with luxurious modern iron and maybe a mix of restored muscle cars. Maybe add some double paned, high effeciency windows and fiberglass shingles :)

I actually like the idea of showing the house and grounds through the years to give it a ssense of history.

What a concept! I love it! thank you all!

I think there may be more ideas here than I can do in a short time frame...but I'm game to give it a go.

That's looking pretty sharp! Nice motors... imagine you might want to keep any vehicles on a separate layer (or even save them out into either a library or as separate objects so that you can remove them from the scene whilst you work on other things, as I'm sure they're quite high poly - most of the vintage car models I have are getting on for a MB or more each which can make things quite sluggish...

Of course, the nearest car coming down the drive really needs somebody (or 'bodies) in it given that it's partway down the drive. :D Maybe Inspector Poirot?!

Of course, that could mean more hi-poly objects... but you can export the car out as a cob, import it into poser if you have it and use that to pose a character accordingly... but you might have fun with period clothing!

I really like the idea of seeing the house change through the ages - but if you decide to try that out, you'll have to think about some other changes you can make to help with the impression - subtle changes to the garden/landscaping; the background trees should change size (and perhaps season? nice autumnal shot might be cool!), some minor changes to the house exterior/ageing... would bne a nice concept though.

Of course, if you want an alterntaive view on a modern mansion, you could consider adding:

Construction vehicles working on the grounds ;)

Or a coachload of (OAP?) visitors...

Got the former from the previous link; I have several coach models if you happen to be interested - they're very high poly, and don't include any interiors (plus need some shader attention), but they're great models, directly from Mercedes...

And just to amuse rjeff, I've knocked up a crude monster truck to share - now you really canmodel one squashing your cars (rather rthan 'photoshopping' it in like I did earlier) - just took a dodge Ram pickup body, the wheels of the digger and threw some struts together - crude but fun!

Ok guys...Nez supplied the monster truck...everyone grab it and wreak some havok on your favorite car models! Post your mayhemic renders and let the good times roll! WOOHOO!

Maybe we can even have a poll for folks to pick their favorite Scene-O-Destruction! (tm)

thanks for the truck Nez :)
