Subject - 'Nightmares and Dreamscapes'....

Please post your WIP links and comments for the March 09 MMC (i.e. MMC #15) here - finished entries should go in the separate 'finished entries' thread, HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=96212#post96212)as per the example of the last challenge...

Please start your own WIP threads for your entry - the original idea was that people would view your WIP as part of your entry, observing your progress, how well you followed your own concept, etc, not just basing their vote on your final image but on the whole progress/process (though whether anyone bothers is another matter). The WIPs are also a great tool for others wanting to learn.

Due to starting a few days late, deadline is 23:59pm (GMT) on Thursday 26th March, giving a little over 3 weeks for entries, with voting starting on 27th and ending on 31st March (I may have to ask someone else to administer starting the poll as I probably won't be able to on the 27th).

Rules:

Normal rules apply (except you may as well forget the one about creating a tutorial for the tutorium as no one ever bothers).

For the purposes of this challenge at least, your 'final submission' may contain more than one image if you feel it expresses your entry better, or that your submission may be in the form of an animation or flash file if that is your artisitc preference.

External apps, post processing etc: we've been over this argument before, but given the nature of this challenge, I'll restate MY views which will stand as rules for this challenge - the MAIN application used should be tS but other tools/companion apps are acceptable provided they don't constitute the major part of your work - 'hero objects' should be created in tS but Makehuman, Ivy Generator etc can be used for non-hero items. Any doubt on whether it's appropriate, just ask. Post process/photoshop etc are fine provided they are used in moderation (compositing, subtle effects, DOF etc) - again, if in doubt, show what you have done (e.g. before and after) for consideration. Main point is to be transparent about your techniques - state your applications and what they've been used for - the challenge is about building a whole (ideally 'finished') scene, not necessarily about using one tool to do so.

OK?

LOL, I don't believe it. When Spacekadet advised all the February MMC competitors to think about the next topic because of his extended deadline, the theme I came up with was...Something Wicked this Way Comes.

So, needless to say Nez, I think your choice is really cool and think that this is gonna be a great challenge and can't wait to see what the community dreams up.

Good luck all.

Thanks Breech, to be honest that's a relief! I'd say great minds think alike, but maybe it's just our British minds...

I'd not given it any thought as I absolutely hate coming up with challenge subjects (I don't have a great track record at getting partcipation). I only came up with this one this morning in an attempt to allow for a greater stylistic range that should hopefully appeal to those who favour more stylised approaches as well. Maybe it's too close to the Dali challenge, but hopefully it should be fun...

I'm in!

Need to create another section for my cave on a project of mine, so the timing is perfect. It will force me now to 'git er dun'. :D

Besides my interest, ... this is another good idea Nez.

Will have to think about this one... My dreams are pretty detailed and strange. For most people anyway.... If I think of something, will definitely join up on this one.

Thanks guys.

Georg - no, I haven't seen the film yet but would like to, watched a trailer the other day and have read a few pieces on the background as it's not a comic I'm familiar with, but don't think I'll be able to persuade the wife to go see it!

Dragn - thought this might be up your street, look forward to seeing what you come up.

Kena - I know what you mean; I'd have a hard time translating my own dreams into an image, but it doesn't need to be your own dream/nightmare... it could be a 'cliche' like giant spiders, creatures, haunted house, creepy castle, a warped/surreal landscape, all sorts of things really... I have a few ideas of my own at the moment but not totally settled.

If you have any thoughts on the submission matter, feel free to say - I know there is some opposition to multiple images being used but I suport the concept of a submission being more than one static image - how would you judge the epic that is Marcel's 'future project' on the basis of one image for example? In fairness, any single image from that thread could probably win, but my point is that you miss the sheer scale and awesomeness of what he's done if you only see one picture. I'm happy for submissions in form of animation or flash for example, but for the sake of some form of order, I'm considering a limit of three static images if that's your preferred format - opinions?

Started a concept drawing - haven't really gotten into the Steven King mood yet (title of one of his book.) Sizes and content may vary depending on your location. :D

How about two? One called something like 'main entry', the other 'alternate view'. It's an honest compromise between 'one', and 'a few'. I do like the idea of three, but we Are supposed to vote on (1) final beauty image. (the best argument I've heard against multiple final pictures is... there's always the WIP :) - and yes, the reply to that is: hey, it's hard enough to get people to spend One minute to vote!). But I also agree with your point; can't get to see the Whole grandness of some projects with just one picture.

WIPs are meant to share ones knowledge and tribulations. The 'contests' (with no prize) are to force ourselves to think and try new ways. That's my 2 cents.

I have no problem with three, I prefer 2, and don't like 'only one' :D

I'll try not to stir up too much dust...but you know me ;):D!!! By the way, congratulations on your win (I really did like your car !!!:)).
I'm kind of mixed on this...I feel that the WIP is where multiple images reside and the contest is for one final entry (to reduce multiple image chaos). However, I like the idea of being able to tell a story with your images...thus including 3 final entries to fill in a story line ! So, along the 3 final entry story line concept, I like it !:);)
I could have used that with my Pharos Lighthouse entry !

James, Jack - thanks for pitching in, hope you manage to the find enough time to have some fun with it. You;re both off to a great start too.

Rjeff - glad to hear you want to try something too; again, I hope you find the time as I'm sure you could come up with something interesting.

Dragn/Mr 3D - thanks for the feedback on number of images, apprecaite you taking the time to comment. I'll maybe hold off on a final decision a little longer to give others a chance to express their views, but am inclined to allow 2 or 3 images if that helps tell a story... (like I would allow short animation or flash to tell a story). I've an idea along that line that I'd like to try myself, although obviously I won't be putting it up for the vote anyway.

Mr 3D - you're right, the WIP should really be where the wider story is told with extra images if required but as Dragn notes I worry that many voters don't really look at the WIPs (which is a shame)... and I do like the idea of being allowed to have a more 'dynamic' submission if that works for some people - and yes, your lighthouse could have been cool in a 'story line' form of some sort. Of course, you could still do that 'post-challenge' if it's something that interests you - some of the MMC entries do live on beyond the challenge...

Ironiclly I'm working on something with a similar theme, but its only modeled in TS and I doubt it would be anywhere near finished by the deadline.. but I guess I could try and do a single scene, I'd have to build it away lol

Even if you can only submit an element of what you are working towards as an entry to the contest that could be fine -maybe there's one element you need to produce that you could do as a standalone for the contest and then integrate into your project?

You're obviously capable of somehting that fits the theme (I'd like to see a bigger view of your avatar - can't quite make it out but looks creepy!).

Hi Nez, the Avatar is the entry i did for the planets SMC that got pulled when the rules changed

The part of the game with the dreamscape is the hardest bit to do so I was planning on trying to do that first I've never done anything backwards before lol so yes I'll give it a go

Its on a HP Lovecraft theme from his commonplace book (well worth being a future topic for a MMC)

Just a friendly reminder that time is nearly up - midnight tomorrow night is closing time unless everyone starts jumping up and down for an extension...

Assuming that doesn't happen, I'd be grateful for a volunteer who'd be prepared to set up the voting poll on Friday as I won't have access to a pc after tomorrow until next week, which would delay voting too long - it should start Friday and finish on Monday or early Tuesday... Any volunteers (please?!):o

Hah - that's a nice try Jack! I don't personally have any objection to extending by a few days (to Monday say) but am reluctant to let it drag on for an extra week as folks have been trying over the last few months to keep these challenges from running on too long (and I was guilty of that before).

BUT - as this could potentially put several contestants at a perceived disadvantage (i.e. it possibly allows you and Dragn, for instance, a chance to 'catch up' with those further ahead), I'd like to see a reasonable degree of consensus about whether folks are happy to allow a few more days.

So I would ideally like to see the views of all contestants in the next 8 hours (i.e. by the time I leave the computer until Monday!) - I realise this is unlikely but we'll see how we go.

Jack, I'm assuming you'd like the extension (please confirm if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that to be the case from your comment and from your thread).

So - Jamesmc, Mr 3d, Dragn, if you are able please let me know whether you'd like a few more days (or whether you object to an potential extension) - either here or by PM.

Steinie - I'd just like confirmation of whether you'd like your entry formally considered part of the challenge as I know I kind of talked you into it... I'm assuming from your posts that you are officially finished and also that you probably won't object to the extension (based on instinct..)

Anyone else? As far as I'm aware there are no other official entries though one or two others said they were interested. This could your chance for a last gasp entry...

Finally, please remember to put your finished entries in the the thread of that name, whatever deadline we agree...

Yeah, Monday'd be fine. I can't see extending it any longer than that. I'm cool with it either way. A bit surprised that I got in as much time as I did. ;)

Well you're the only one to actually reply before I call it a day, so Monday it is... I'll say 5pm GMT - you'll have to work out what that is if you're in a different time zone...

Sorry for the late reply Nez.

I have no problem with any extension. I won't have time to add anything to my pic in the next few days, but maybe it can aid the others.
