A commercial break for you!
What would you get if Steinie, Prodigy, Splinters and 3DFrog did an Animation together?........

By watching Animations already done with similar subjects you'll get a better understanding on how to breath life into your own.
I'm watching your work come along, stick with it! |

:D... Thanx for the commercial break Stienie. Your timing was perfect... because...
... I have been trying for a few hours now to attach a skeleton, and tS crashes every time. I've tried shutting everything I can down before I attach, tried wireframe, non wireframe option, etc, etc, even said Please ( a bunch of times). Notin' worked.
- Question - does the end of the bone have to be exactly (or very close) to the edge of the model (exhibit 1) so it'll attach correctly, or can I move it in more (exhibit 2)?
- Question - Is it ok to have the green bone (exhibit 3) and/or joint extend a lil outsaide the frame, or is that part of my problem?
Is it my frame, is it my Karma (no wait, I've been almost good lately), is it .... aww heck; it's 6 + in the mornin... I'm pooped :D
Any guesses?
PS: I tried to screengrab my CPU usage overloading; it only got to abt 55%. |

Try having the bones extend out of the mesh. If the end of the bone is too close to the edge of the mesh, maybe you are getting divide by zero errors? Also you may want to look into the MotionStudio plugin which is great for animating and is freeware now. Puppeteer is another option. Most people consider 6.6's native bone system to be a nightmare.... lol
One of the big advances with 7.5 is the addition of completely re-written bone system. |

@ Jack - I tried inside, outside, close to the edge, far from the edge, etc. I am down for the count on this one. An earlier test animi worked fine (but the mesh was less poly). This mesh is a lil over 2000 polys, so that can't be it, can it?
I had this problem before on a 10,000 poly model; had a hard time, until I aligned everything perfect, then it attached, but would screw up the model after a few movements of the arms and/or legs. I'm stuck man.
I've been reading here how 7.5 is so much better for animating, but for now, back at the bat cave, I'm stuck.
Can anybody Please answer the 2 specific questions from my last post? |

I was never able to use the old native bones system so can't help you with your questions if you really want to use those bones, but I also recommend motion studio. It is a pleasure to use.
Here's the website to get it from:

Thanx 3dfrog - will go check it out. I REALLY want to get this thing done. There's so much more to do that I haven't even started yet for this short, so getting stuck on somthing as simple as this is ridiculous. |

Caligari also sells a very good video course for Motion Studio that Oliver Roe did. |

Yes that was an excellent course, I highly recommend it. It's worth the full price in my opinion but maybe there will be another courses sale sometime ;)
It is the character animation course:

You read my mind 3dfrog. Was gonna ask which course it is from all of them. TA Daaa! lol Gonna buy it right now.
I used Motionstudio for 2 days now. It does seem a very easy interface. Problem is, when I do attach skeleton, it only attaches certain points, leaving others behind. Where's the catch? Maybe its me (I tried it on the bird; didn't work. I now tried it on a simple shape, and well, the problem I just stated happened).
To be continued... |

Motion studio has it's own bones system. If you use the MoStu bones, you don't use the TS bones. ;) |

Question: Can I move this rigged bird having used Motionstudio, or do I have to keep it in one basic spot and move the cam around?
Yes, I am still tryin to git er done. I got the rig on the skin, but now can't seem to move it from where the model is placed. When I move the skeleton, the body stays, or vice versa, but it animates correctly when I leave it there. Whatta I doin wrong? |

hey dragneye, it was really cool meeting ya at the meetup.
To make the bird move in space select the top level of the skeleton and move it and keyframe in motion studio. The top level just says skeleton by default, unless you changed the name.
Looking forward to seeing it finished. |

Here's a short screen test. The first one is more of the sweep that I would like. The bird swoops from above the cam into view. The second follows the bird for a bit first (I'll clean up the jerkiness).
Which do you guys prefer? |

I also prefer the first one... but then it's a bit smother... Have you looked online for movies of flying birds? that may help you determine how to position the wings beter. |

Thanx Butterpaw... but if this short's technical issues (the crashes) don't smooth out from now on, it'll be a while before I need it
Kena, funny enough (for someone with a ton of footage) I haven't even looked at any bird pictures while doing this. It's not really supposed to be 'realistic' (the background you viewed is a bit too real for the feel I'm after, but I can't get 'real' out of my soul). This clip will be only abt 15 seconds of footage, just enough to lull the viewer into a sense of peace, complacency, calm.
I have been walking on eggshells trying to make this work. The bird is less poly than I intended, the movements less mobile than it deserves, till I get a finished product for review. If/when I get my minute's worth of footage as intended, and have it fully work, I may go back and redo it. This simple 'fun' project has been more hassle than fun. Man, it sounded so simple when I thought it up. |

lol - I've had LOTS of projects that I thought would be fun, and then ran out of what to do with them. :D Nature of the beast, as it were. LOTS of imaginings, not enough of finishings ;) |
