Hi all

I am just posting to get an idea of a good computer spec to get. At the minute I am using trueSpace off my laptop (its an old-ish laptop (2003) on its last legs), which does take its time to do a lot of things. I am now going to get a desktop PC, which I will mainly be using, for trueSpace and other animation computer modelling software.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what I should be looking for in the computer spec as I am not the most clued on computers.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanx

Jimbo

As a general rule, computers for 3d modeling should have fast CPUs and GPUs and lots of memory, but it also depends on what you do and what kind of 3D software you use.

I use trueSpace6.6 on an AMD AthlonXP 3000+ with 1GB of RAM and a Radeon9800 and it works very nice. The only problems I have are with the high-poly scenes and the time it takes to render them.

For tS7 things are a bit different. My system doesn't do very well in the player even with lower poly scenes. That's why I'm thinking of getting a new system myself. I won't settle for less than 2GB of RAM this time and the CPU will be dual core (thinking of the Core 2 Duo E6600). The video card has to be pretty fast, too, but I'm waiting for DX10 parts to appear.

I have 2 gig ram and a dual AMD Opteron with 3DNow. It reneders very quickly.

I use a laptop with 1.3 GHz and 512 RAM...oh yeah, a graphics card some dude at ATI wiped with.

My computer is REALLY less than desireable, so anything above it would be perfect:)

I really need to sell this dang laptop:mad:

My P4 3.2GHz with 2 Gb memory and Geforce7600GT worked really nice for both ts6-7 and games :D,

but I'm waiting for delivery on a Core2 Quad with 4 Gb and 8800GTX that most likely will make my old one feel like a snail

Do you have any limit on what you like to spend on a computer?

Regarding ts7 there was a discussion regarding graphics cards here:

Just make sure it's supporting directX9 and pixel shader 2. ( something I've learned from TomG ;) )

Unless you plan on switching to Vista some time in the next year, why bother with DX10? Ok, so it would give you extra options in terms of "future-proofing", but in a year or so from now you'd be able to get a faster DX10 card for less than you'd pay for 1 now.

I need to add a "green with envy" smiley to my collection. Which 1s have you got, & are they 200 series, or 2000 series?

Well, if it's not you actually paying for it, & you're good at talking people into spending their money... Despite being an AMD fanboy, I'm tempted to say to try asking for a dual-CPU quad-core Xeon machine, as it's the only supported [by Caligari] way you'll get 8 cores working with tS until AMD brings out their quad core Opterons. Someone on here [I forget who], managed to get tS [I think it was 6.6] working on an 8 CPU [presumably all single core, considering how long ago it was] system with a specially modified v. of Win2K, but other than that, the only versions of Windows that support more than 2 actual CPU sockets are the server versions of 2K & server 2003, neither of which are supported by Caligari. That doesn't necessarily mean tS won't work on them, but you'll be "going it alone", so to speak.

Thanks guys!

All your info is a great help! I am rather, shall we say, rubbish when it comes to computers (trying to improve that!). Glad I have some ammo when I go to buy a computer rather than going with "I wanna good fast one!". :p

My budget is not huge, but am willing to spend more if needs be! :D

Thanks again guys!

Hi Jimbo,

I'm usually late on getting into these kind of discussions (Sorry Shrike! ;) ) but the "winning formula" right now is pretty simple:

Intel Core 2 Duo (or Quad) - Any speed will do since they all insanely overclock

2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 ram (4 if you can afford)

SATA II Harddrive

nVidia 8800 GTS 320MB

Which motherboard you get would be determined by whether or not you want to overclock. I chose an nVidia 650i board.

You can save a ton of money getting your parts here:

http://www.newegg.com/

If you shop cheap, you should be able to get everything for less than $1500 no probs.

I'm an AMD fan, but right now the Intel chips are cheaper and faster, so there's no sense going AMD unless you can get it dirt cheap. Same for ATI (now part of AMD), nVidia's 8800 is twice as fast as anything else on the market and is the only DX10 card currently available.

If your budget is sub $1000, pick up an e-Machines or Gateway equivalent and slap an nVidia 7900GS card ($160) in it. You might have to upgrade the Power supply but it's hard to beat their total system prices (~$500).

You can see the thread for my machine and some discussion on parts here:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2179

Good luck!! :D

So what'd you end up with, CPU model I mean?
