It was worth the wait! Nice to see this back on track. The lighting on the legs and the window look perfect. |

Thanks for the encouragement Steinie!
Kena, well spotted! The 'dispatch' sign is a great gag, I wish I could take credit for it but that was spacekdet's idea.
Ok guys 'n' gals, here's the latest fiddle, crit away please as I feel it's nearing the end...

The hat stand by the file cabinets could be a little more little or more refractive.
It doesn't show much to the scene, perhaps an umbrella or hat, scarf, cane or something hanging from it as well - briefcase leaning up next to it.
Looking good over all, has an appeal of a detective mystery. :) |

It's looking good. the right foreground is still empty though. And for a thorough search, tip over the hat stand. Make it look a bit more chaotic that way. Or at least put it by the door where it belongs ;) |

Very nice atmosphere and funny. My critic would be the door, there is something with it. It seems not tall enough compared to the chair and cabinets, and also because the light behind the door goes al the way to the floor, it seems as if there is no floor behind the door and we are looking at the door from a sort of stage. I hope I make myself clear.

Door fixed (I think) plus other tweaks and additions here and there. I had the hatstand on the deck originally but didn't like it so it's staying standing. I also don't want to put coats/umbrellas on it as that, I think, would detract from the unoccupied feeling. I was going to put stuff on the walls but I think office's tend to have plain, don't they?
Here it be, comment away...

Hooray! a light switch, finally. ( looks a little too wide, but at least it's there)
Speaking of light, it's become harder to read the sign on the door.
Speaking of the door, the proportions look better.
The file cabinet drawers are oddly empty; I'd expect to see a larger pile of paper/folders slewed out from the tipped one.
(Yeah, have fun modeling that)
Anyway to get blurry reflections on the floor?
Keep asking for comments and we'll never let you finish it! |

This looks really good. Have you tried it in black & white with all the textures applied?
I like the effect on the glass in the door, it looks like that safety glass you get with the wire mesh in it. |

I really like this a lot.. it evokes the uncertainty you were looking for.. :)
I have watched in the background, really... It is so interesting to see how the details are developed.
About the light switch, different places / countries have different sorts of light switches.. I've seen some like this.. |

Yeah Butter, things in Europe are different, light switches, door handles.
I used to hate those door handles being a fairly tall guy. I would gung myself on those door handles on occasion as I walked by them. What would happen is that my belt loops would get caught in them and stop me cold, making me look like a silly nilly.
What was even worse that some of the "knob handle" doors in Europe didn't turn, they had to be opened by key only.
I lived in different apartments and more than once the wind would catch the door and slam it shut, which of course would lock the door.
My first lesson in keeping my keys in hand and in my pocket is when I set my keys on an inside table so I could go back to the car to get groceries. I heard a slam, it was snowing and I was locked out. :) |

Looking great Kate!
Curious...Do doors also open outward in Europe? Here in America the doors swing inward. |

CHuckle = How do ypou know it's not opening into an office or something - er, like the dispatch office for example! ;)
Looking great Kate - one comment: I'm a sucker for dramatic lighting and I keep thinking that a beam of light cast through the gap in the open door and stretching across the floor.... well, you get the idea. |

There´s a law here in my country (Austria) that the doors have to open
outwards !! Thats made that way because if there is a panic (fire ... etc.
the people would get hurt otherwise ! But thats only for public buildings!
The doors to flats ..hotelrooms etc. all swing inwards as in most places
in the world!Otherwise these doors when open would block the corridors etc. |

I'm in the US, and our doors at work all swing out as well. For the same reason. Although, I don't think it's the law. Just builder's preference. |

Well I assumed this was the case given the sign on the door. :) |

Blimey guys, it's just a picture! I don't think the legalities of door opening direction is really that important! :)
Joking aside, 'technically' the door would seem to be opening the wrong way but how does anyone know what the door is really opening onto and it doesn't give the pic the right impact if it's the other way, the anticipation is lost.
Spacekdet is right about the light switch, it is too big, and W!zard might get his wish with the light beam as I'm going to have to adjust the lighting cos the door sign is now unreadable due to the door being made taller. It was initally my intention to have the classic 'crack of light' but I couldn't get that and being able to see everything else to work in harmony. Maybe I'll have another go. |

Is it too short or long perhaps? Maybe they open outward in Europe? Who can say! What about the skirt we wonder.

Thats still a little vague james, do you mean the skirt on the woman or the skirting board on the wall? cause theres a tiny bit by the door that looks a different colour, could just be because of a shadow though. |

WWOTW, I think you've caught the mood exactly, and it looks very good to me... I'm sure any 'fixes' you undertake will make it even better.. but already, it sure tells a story of suspense!^_^
Yeah Butter, things in Europe are different, light switches, door handles.
I used to hate those door handles being a fairly tall guy. I would gung myself on those door handles on occasion as I walked by them. What would happen is that my belt loops would get caught in them and stop me cold, making me look like a silly nilly..[snipped]
Heheh, yeah, I met with some similar problems.. (except the snow) ... in Kenya.. lived there for 24 years.. so I got totally used to it.. but I thought the light switches and outlets were totally funky and the fact that outlets could not be anywhere near the floor.. (maybe 2.5 feet up?) ... But I guess things are different when you're dealing with voltage of 220 or more...
The door handle catching .. happens to me still .. even with round knobs, my sleeves are at about the right height... I've torn a few things, and very messy if I'm carrying something that can spill... now I'm more careful! I could just imagine you caught by your belt loops! :D would make a great animation.. ^_^ |

I have been impressed since the first posted "tease" picture.
My only comment is that it lost a little when you can no longer clearly read the "Dispatch" on the door glass. It adds to the mood of the picture, at least for native English speakers.

This is coming along beautifully WWOTW. The light is just abt right (I felt earlier versions were too dark). Great job on the glass. In the original, I did like the idea of reading the name, but it seems that with any other angle other than straight on, that will be lost. Can't think of any solutions for that, other than leaving the door closed, but this 'slightly open' gives so much to the piece that I can't say "close the door". :) |

I love how the floor is turning out. your bump map is perfect, I would say.
For the door, it means a bit more work, but instead of using words in the texture, use 3-d and using boolean subtraction and intersection, you could create an insert. Then join the two together. You can then map a darker glass for the words and keep the lighter for the main window. |

Good call, W!zard. I think a black Lambo would suit her very well.
Kena - nice idea but a little excessive! The lettering is applied with transparancy maps so the effect is the same without the 'depth' (which painted on lettering wouldn't have) and the inevitable artifacts it would throw up. The problem was due to a part of the HDR map and as you can't adjust it's position in Vray like you can with LightWorks, the solution, rather than shift everything to the right, was to move the text down a bit, make it slightly bigger and place a thin scaled cube painted with a plain colour and transparancy on the other side of the door to act like a camera filter. The results of which are below.
Any more ideas people? Speak now or forever hold your peace as I think I'm just about done with this...
