The object here is not so much a work in progress as the renders. I am dusting off this little pet project of mine: a fold flat hanging chair. there is a child's version with a table/workstation but I am still refining that.
Apparently the worlds thinnest folding chair (according to the manufacturer) is less than 1 inch think when collapse. I realise my design is a stool but it collapses to around 1cm thick.
There is more to this design than I am letting on though....
Just to remind myself that I am actually a 3D designer...:D |

unless the hinges were on some kind of slide i'm not sure they'd move like the images suggest. in the upright possition everything is locked inplace, the diagonal peices hold it tight so how does it collapse?
in the renders it looks like one piece of wood is getting longer at each stage.
how about putting holes in it so the 'legs' sit in them like sockets insted of having a set of hinges on the bottom?
this has potential though, a bit more thought and i think you'll crack it. |

Not sure what you mean Jayr, my kids both have one of these and I have a few other protoypes lurking around of varying sizes (youth size, adult size). They definitely work, just the renders I am working on...
A degree in Furniture Design agrees with me...;) |

Nifty idea there. I hope it's ply' though? looks like it from the edges, but the surface looks like rubber-wood ? |

If you have a working one then i must be wrong but this is how i see it:
http://www.lothissen.co.uk/chair.jpg
also the 'leg' under the red line at 1 looks shorter than the leg under 3
Unless some part of the desgin is missing from the renders i acn't see how they would fold without taking screws out to fold them down. |

Wait until you see the table...:D
Yup, plywood and a rubberwood (style) texture. Like I said render needs some work but chair definitely works.
Good spot though. |

Jayr, why the apprehension?
You admit that you must be wrong if I have a working one yet there is doubt there in your reply. I would not lie to you mate...:D
Does this help?
Took a lot of prototypes before I got this right. |

ahhhh i see how you're doing it now! :D
that render does make it clearer. What type on hinges are you using? in the second render they don't look like normal door hinges |

And where to put four chairs when you have finished.....
...plenty of room in the centre for storage too and the chairs lock it all in place...:D
Okay, my wife's friends have left so I can leave my 'den'. Not bad for a few hours work though. |

Seems to be a theme of mine which I unfortunately seem to impose on my students too...:p
I love the idea of flat pack stuff that requires no tools, fittings or glue. We turned out a real nice rocking horse last year that doubled as a sort of puzzle and just slotted together; no fittings or glue at all...:D
Still, I am leaving the best til last. As nice as this chair is in Ply, it had a more...well, funky start to life...;) |

I wish. I submitted it to Ikea a few years ago just before they went retro with all the space age stuff and, despite liking it, they said it did not fit with their future range. I have a registered design on it but a friend in Canada asked me the other day if they had finally bought it.
Why? well, he says he has seen it (or something very similar) in ikea there....:o |

Well, here it is then....
You are a student, with a flat or bedsit. You have next to no room but only your bed to sit on. Your mates come around and sit cross legged on the floor...not good.
You go to the shop with little money to decorate you room. You spot some posters and some reasonably cheap furniture...but can't have both...
...or can you? |

I really like this design, and I saw how it worked immediately (i.e. in the first image) ... my head just works that way, for some reason... origami grey matter, :D
I love the idea .. I could have the sewing machine table I need and have no room for! |

The thought crossed my mind but I am no businessman, I would just like to sell the idea, let someone else make it and reap the rewards...:p
Still, a good way to sell Piggy posters as well...
