Hello all,

Just playing around with TS7.5 and conversion2.1 (I moved the files from TS6.6 and it works fine so far) trying to import a dxf (2D file) and then extrude it to be .642" thick after. These are parts, designed in BobCad v21.5, that I cut out on our CNC router. I am trying to build the unit inside TS so I can make a showroom of our products with the customer's product inserted in our exhibits so they can visualize what it would look like.


Right now when I open the DXF file it is just dots and I am unable to add the "Z" thickness in the object info window or select them.


One must walk before they can run so I want to familiarize my self with TS7.5 with some simple things first before I jump into the 3D side I want to do. Eventually I want to take a detailed object, let's say a 10 point Buck, and model it in fine detail. Then change it's poses so that I have a small herd that all look different but made from the original. Then make a tree and copy/paste/modify to make a forest as the background. Once done convert to STL and bring into my Artistic CAD/CAM program so I can turn it into a relief and walla Carve it on the CNC into a slab of wood, MDF, solid surface acrylic or maybe some other materials. So if any one has something they would like to see routed out from screen to machined, please post them.


Is anyone doing something like this now?

I'm only a beginner dit but that sounds interesting and there's a common workspace where 7.5 users can meet for teamworking

When you Save As the object in Bobcat surely if it's wilderness :) - are there more options for saving as maybe dot obj .obj or dot 3ds or one of the filetypes you see in the TS Loading screen? Maybe both programs have a standard filetype in common, or a file-conversion utility. If you can open the file maybe you can Save it As a TS native file and reload it

Jewellery designers could use CNC I bet and I've seen excellent work in here. We've got 12 lathes of all sorts downstairs, fascinating

I'm not 100% I'm understanding you, but if so it's similar to a problem I had before. I've only got TS5, but if I import a dxf (or eps, etc) there's no obvious way to extrude lines/curves etc from that information.


I believe this is something to do with the way the import is handled and how TS recognises the imported objects - it may be possible to adjust this by using different import settings, but I'm not sure. As far as I can see, in a dxf file the lines/curves/points aren't recognised as a suitable TS profile/curve/spline that can be extruded or manipulated. I may be wrong, but that was my experience.


What I have done is import the dxf file, made sure the scale is right and then 'traced' TS curves/splines over the elements I want, or placed primitives, etc - effectively using it as a 'background' reference image, although I generaly prefer just to use a jpg for that most of the time.


I might have missed a trick, or may be not understanding you, and don't know about 7.5's capability, but hope that is some help...

On the Load Object dialogue, after you've selected the DXF file type, click the Settings button to see the DXF import settings.


I normally check Fix Normals, Resolve Holes, Close Arcs, Center Object and Merge Layers. If tS is still not happy importing the object then you will have to check if there are any settings for exporting the DXF file from the other application that will help.
