Start with no lights in the scene...will render black in LW but Vray GI is a global light source. I am no Vray master but I get nice results with one shadow casting light (area, omni or infinite) set pretty low and GI with either an image (for HDRI effect) or simply grey colour for ambient lighting.

Here is an image with the GI set to a dark grey/orange colour and one yellow omni light to the right of the face...nothing else.

The 3 light setup is the basics of understanding lights and how they are used. In real world (and in CG) 3 point lights are used mainly to light a "subject" and not a whole scene and is very much still useful. GI is used mainly to light an entire scene, then there is the combination. So the light setup depends on what you are trying to achieve.

GI replaces a lot of the need for 3 point lighting. For example you no longer need the fill light and bounced light helps with rim lighting. Basically I just use key lighting for my GI scenes.

2 tips to avoid over lighting:

1.) If it's bright enough in Workspace it's too bright in VRay with GI. You have to account for the extra light that the GI solution will be adding to the scene and each light adds bounced light to that solution.

2.) Use darker lights (grey instead of white) and envirionment settings (dark grey) or stronger fall off -- attenuation.
